Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Sacramento State starter Travis Adams was brilliant on the mound and Jorge Bojorquez had a career-high five RBIs as Sacramento State cruised to a 10-0 win Saturday at Santa Clara.
Following last night's closely contested, 2-1 come-from-behind win, Sacramento State (7-3) left no doubt in Saturday's game, scoring a season-high 10 runs on 11 hits while the Hornets' staff shut out Santa Clara (3-7), allowing just four hits.
That pitching performance was headlined by sophomore starter Travis Adams, who was dealing Saturday night. The right-hander matched his career-high with seven innings and threw just 87 pitches, 61 of them for strikes.
Adams allowed just two hits – one in each the first and third innings – and matched another career high with seven strikeouts. He did not walk a batter, though did put one on with a hit by pitch in the seventh.
Between a lead-off hit in the third inning and the seventh inning hit batter, Adams retired 14 straight Broncos.
Adams has thrown seven innings two other times, the first also against Santa Clara in a home game last season. He had a nearly identical line a year ago at UC Irvine, allowing two hits and striking out seven over seven scoreless innings in his final outing of 2020.
Brady Rodriguez pitched the eighth for the Hornets, his fifth appearance of the season. Rodriguez struck out two and allowed a hit in an otherwise uneventful inning. Behind him, Wesley Harper pitched a scoreless ninth, allowing a two-out hit but otherwise retiring the Broncos and sealing the game without issue.
The shutout is the first for the Hornets' staff this season. Sacramento State tossed two shutouts in 2020 and had five in 2019.
Offensively, Sacramento State did more than enough to back its pitchers on Saturday. After struggling against Santa Clara's starter – just one hit in four innings – the Hornets feasted on the Broncos' bullpen.
The floodgates opened in the fifth inning as Sacramento State scored six times in the frame. The Hornets worked through three Santa Clara relievers in the inning, scoring six times on four hits, a hit by pitch, and a Santa Clara error.
Keith Torres started the scoring with a two-run single up the middle for his second and third RBIs of the season. Torres came around to score just moments later on a Ryan Walstad RBI-single, the first of three hits on the night for the senior.
The big blast came off the bat of Jorge Bojorquez, who smashed a three-run home run out to left field to cap the sixth-run fifth. The home run was Bojorquez's first of the season and the third of his career.
Bojorquez wasn't done, however, adding to Sacramento State's lead in the seventh inning with a bases-loaded, two-run double.
Bojorquez finished his night 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He reached base four times, scored twice, and drove in a career-high five. It was Sacramento State's first five-RBI game since March of 2019 when Dawsen Bacho drove in five in a Hornets' 21-10 win at Cal Baptist.
Hunter Dorraugh capped off the scoring for the Hornets in the ninth inning, hitting a towering pinch-hit two-run home run out to left field. In limited action between last season and this season, Dorraugh is now 3-for-12 in his career with two home runs, a double, and six runs driven in.
Walstad, who like Bojorquez, also had three hits on Saturday, scored twice and added an RBI of his own. The three-hit game was the second this season for Walstad, who has reached base in six of his seven games this year. In fact, dating back to the 2019 season, Walstad has reached base in 48 of his last 50 starts, an incredible feat of consistency.
Five other Hornets had a hit and eight different Hornets scored a run as the team set season highs in runs scored, RBIs, and hits.
