Box Score STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Sacramento State jumped out to an early lead Saturday against Tarleton, but the Hornets were unable to hold on to that lead in a wild 16-13 loss to the Texans.
Saturday's contest between Sacramento State (9-5, 2-1) and Tarleton (7-10, 1-2) looked to have the makings of another rout as the Hornets scored eight times in the top of the first and appeared poised to repeat yesterday's 17-3, seven-inning win.
Each of the first five Hornets reached base and Sacramento State sent 10 men to the plate in the top half of the first. They scored eight times on four hits, drew three walks and a hit by pitch, and had the help of two wild pitches in the inning.
Jorge Bojorquez, who had a monster game for Sacramento State, was 2-for-2 in the top of the first inning. His second hit was a three-run home run, his second home run in as many days and his third this season.
Despite the early scoring, Tarleton was far from out of the game. The Texans responded immediately, scoring three times in the home half of the first against Sacramento State starter Eli Saul.
Tarleton added two more against Saul in the second inning, forcing the Hornets to go to the bullpen. The move didn't slow the Texans, who added another three runs in the bottom of the third. After three innings of play, what appeared to be a one-sided affair was suddenly a narrow, 9-8, Hornets' lead.
Then, Tarleton broke things open in the fourth inning, tagging the Hornets for seven runs on six hits. The Texans had three singles and three home runs in the inning.
Now trailing 15-9, Sacramento State scratched across another run in the sixth thanks to a Ryan Walstad RBI-double, before scoring three times in the eighth on a Dawsen Bacho home run.
Bacho's blast, his second of the year, cut the deficit to just two, but Tarleton added a run in the home half of the eighth before retiring the Hornets in order in the ninth to hand Sacramento State the 16-13 loss.
Bacho's home run was his only hit of the day, though his three RBIs were tied for most in the game for the Hornets.
Bacho was even with Jorge Bojorquez, who had an impressive day at the plate. Bojorquez finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 4-for-6 with a home run, a double, three RBIs, and two runs scored.
Ryan Walstad also had an incredible day at the plate, reaching base five times in Saturday's loss. Walstad was officially 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored. He also drew two walks and was hit by a pitch.
Martin Vincelli-Simard had three hits, going 3-for-5 and driving in a pair, while Keith Torres also had an RBI and scored a run.
In total, Sacramento State had 13 hits, including five for extra bases. Tarleton was even better, though, piling up 18 hits, six of them for extra bases.
On the mound, Sacramento State used six different pitchers and it was the third, lefthander Rylan Tinsley, who was charged with his second loss of the year.
Freshman righthander Cole Tremain turned in an impressive performance out of the bullpen. Coming into the game with two outs in the fourth, Tremain managed to stop the bleeding with 2.1 scoreless innings. He struck out six, walked one, and allowed just two hits, giving the Hornets a chance to climb back into the game.
Kevin Haynes, another freshman, added a scoreless inning on the back of Tremain's outing. It was Haynes' fifth appearance this season.
New to the WAC this season, Saturday's win was Tarleton's first Western Athletic Conference win in their its history.
