Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Freshman outside hitter Bridgette Smith had a season-high 20 kills, and Sacramento State limited Portland State to a .196 hitting percentage on the way to a four-set (25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23) victory over the Vikings on Friday evening at the Nest.
Sacramento State improved to 8-5 overall and 8-5 in the Big Sky Conference. In addition, the team is now 3-0 on its season-long four-match homestand and remained perfect at home this year (7-0). The Hornets' final home match is tomorrow against Portland State at 1 p.m., and the team will attempt to finish a season undefeated at home for the first time since it went 9-0 in 1986.
The homecourt dominance of Big Sky opposition also continued. Since 2015, the Hornets are now 43-5 in Big Sky matches inside the Nest.
The loss dropped Portland State to 3-12 overall, and 2-11 in the Big Sky. The Vikings were coming off a pair of home wins last week against Montana.
Tonight also marked the return of senior middle blocker Cianna Andrews who had missed the first 12 matches with injury. Andrews finished with a kill in three swings.
All four sets were relatively close, but none tighter than the fourth frame. Neither team led by more than four points the entire set, and a Portland State kill eventually tied things at 22-22. However, kills from Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin and Macey Hayden, followed by a Viking kill, set up Sarah Falk for the match-clinching kill and the 25-23 win.
The Hornets hit .245 and limited the Vikings to .196, the seventh straight match and ninth time overall Sacramento State has held an opponent to a hitting percentage below .200. The Hornets finished with 56 kills, 54 assists, nine aces, 70 digs and nine team blocks.
Smith finished with 20 kills, nine digs, two blocks and an ace - six of those kills came in the fourth set. The 20 kills were the most by a Hornet this season. She was also the only Sacramento State player in double-figure kills.
Hayden had nine kills, 10 digs and a pair of aces, and Caitlin Volkmann nine kills. Falk registered six kills and three blocks and Kalani Hayes posted five kills and five blocks. Both middle blockers hit .417. Rightside hitter Karlee Soderberg had five kills and three blocks, and setters Ashtin Olin (35 assists, nine digs) and McKenna Smith (17 assists, nine digs) combined for 52 assists and 18 digs.
Libero Caty Cordano had her fifth match with at least 20 digs after finishing with 22 to go along with a match-high three aces. Kamba-Griffin had a kill and three blocks, and Michelle Taynton had a pair of aces.
Prior to tomorrow's match vs. Portland State, senior libero Paige Swinney will be honored for her contributions to the program. Swinney will be playing her final match inside the Nest.
