SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State won the doubles point and picked up a win at No. 6 singles from freshman Jan Silva, but it was not enough in a 4-2 home loss to San Francisco.
Today marked a rematch between the two teams from earlier this month when the Dons won, 6-1, in a matchup that saw USF win four singles matches in three sets.
Today was similar as USF won at Nos. 2 and 3 singles in three sets, and got a tightly contested 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1. Hornet freshman Rudolfs Aksenoks had his match stopped at No. 5 when he was up, 5-3, in the third set and had match point because USF already had the necessary four points for victory.
The loss dropped Sacramento State to 1-4 while USF improved to 3-0 on the young season.
Much like the first meeting between the two teams, the Hornets won the doubles point as the duos of Liam Liles/Mark Keki (6-3 at No. 1) and Silva/Aksenoks (6-3 at No. 3) were both victorious.
After Michael Vizcarra lost at No. 4 singles in straight sets, Silva gave the Hornets a 2-1 lead with his 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6. However, USF strung together three straight singles wins to earn the victory. Hermont Legaspi (6-4, 6-3 at No. 1), Keki (6-2, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 2) and Liles (6-3, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 3) each fell.
The Hornets are back in action for their sixth straight home match to start the season when they host Santa Clara this Sunday at 1 p.m.
