Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Sophomore right-hander Marissa Bertuccio tossed a five-hit shutout, and Carley Morfey had two of the Hornets' three RBIs as Sacramento State beat Cal, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
The win for the Hornets snapped a 13-game losing streak against Cal, and marked the team's first win over the Golden Bears since the 2009 season. Cal, which was playing its season opener, is usually ranked among the nation's top 25 teams (currently not ranked this season).
Sacramento State improved to 3-5 with the victory, and 3-3 on its home field. The Hornets bounced back quickly after dropping a pair of one-run decisions at Saint Mary's yesterday.
Bertuccio (3-2) was impressive all afternoon, allowing just five hits (all singles) with one walk and four strikeouts. The sophomore threw 114 pitches, and her season ERA dropped to 1.52. After allowing three hits through the first two innings, Bertuccio yielded just two hits the final five innings. That included working out of a two-outs bases loaded jam in the fourth.
Bertuccio was locked in a pitchers duel with Cal's Sona Halajian until Sacramento State finally broke through with one run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. The Hornets registered their first run in the fourth when Morfey's one-out, RBI-sinlge scored Lewa Day from second base.
In the fifth, the Hornets took advantage of three walks, and eventually received a sacrifice fly from Katie Vretzos scoring Aliyah Robles. Later in the inning, a bases loaded walk to Morfey scored Haley Hanson. Halajian started the inning, but was replaced by Alexandra Perez.
While Bertuccio was the winning pitcher, Halajian (0-1) got the loss, allowing three hits and three runs (two earned) in four-plus innings. Sacramento State finished with just three hits, but also drew five walks. Shea Graves, Kailie Hargis and Morfey had the Hornets' hits.
Sacramento State is back in action next weekend when the team travels to Fresno to play four games over two days. That includes Saturday vs. Long Beach State (12:30 p.m.) and Fresno State (3:00 p.m.). The Hornets play the same two teams on Sunday.
