VOLTA PICKS UP 200TH CAREER WIN, VOLLEYBALL DOWNS IDAHO

Box Score

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State picked up its second win in as many nights against Idaho and head coach Ruben Volta won his 200th career match as the Hornets defeated the Vandals, 3-1 (25-19, 25-18, 22-25, 25-21), on Sunday evening at the Nest.

Volta, who took over as head coach at Sacramento State in 2008, reached his 200th victory on a night when Sacramento State recorded a season-high 15.0 team blocks and remained perfect at home. He becomes just the second Hornet head volleyball coach in school history to reach 200 wins (Debby Colberg was the other).

With the victory, the Hornets sweep the season series with Idaho as Sacramento State won in four sets last night as well. The Hornets improved to 5-3 overall and 5-3 in the Big Sky Conference. Every match Sacramento State plays this season will be a league matchup. The Hornets also improved to 4-0 at home, and have dropped just two sets during those four matchups.

Idaho, which had won four of its last five matches entering the weekend, dropped to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the Big Sky. Sacramento State is now 8-5 all-time against the Vandals and 4-2 on the home floor. Last season, the two teams split their two matches against one another with each resulting in a five-set affair.

The Hornets' block party helped limit Idaho to a .154 hitting percentage. Five different Hornets had at least three blocks, including freshman Kalani Hayes' eight kills and 10 blocks. She becomes the first Hornet with double figures in blocks since Lana Brown had 10 at Weber State on Nov. 11, 2017.

Other Hornets with multiple blocks included freshman Caitlin Volkmann (7 kills, 6 blocks), junior Sarah Falk (5 kills, 5 blocks), freshman Karlee Soderberg (5 kills, 3 blocks) and senior Macey Hayden (10 kills, 12 digs, 3 blocks). Hayden also hit .292.

Freshman outside hitter Bridgette Smith led all players with 16 kills while also tacking on 12 digs. Libero Caty Cordano led the Hornets with 16 digs, while setters Ashtin Olin (23 ast, 5 digs) and McKenna Smith (16 ast, 9 digs) combined for 39 assists and 14 digs. In the fourth set, with the Hornets trailing, 18-15, Olin spearheaded a 7-0 Sacramento State run by serving six consecutive points.

Kenney Warren led the Vandals with 11 kills, four blocks and a match-high .526 hitting percentage.

Sacramento State will now enter its bye week, and will not play again until a pair of matchups at Weber State on Feb. 26-27. The Hornets have just eight matches remaining on the schedule until they play at the Big Sky Tournament in Greeley, Colo., on March 31.
