Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Four Hornets had double figures in kills, and Sacramento State's defense limited Idaho to a .181 hitting percentage on the way to a 3-1 victory (25-15, 25-16, 22-25, 25-19) over the Vandals on Saturday evening in the Nest.
Sacramento State hit .280, saw four players register at least 11 kills, and enjoyed advantages over Idaho in kills (60-47), aces (6-2), digs (74-66) and team blocks (12.0-8.5). The Hornets were not threatened in any of the three sets they won, never trailing in the first and second frames, and trailing just once in the fourth.
Freshman Bridgette Smith had a team-high 15 kills to go along with 11 digs and a .333 hitting percentage. Fellow freshman outside hitter Caitlin Volkmann added a season-high tying 12 kills and a .286 hitting percentage, and freshman middle Kalani Hayes registered a season-high tying 11 kills, a .438 hitting percentage and three blocks. Senior Macey Hayden rounded out the four Sacramento State players with double-digit kills as she finished with a season-best 11 kills, 14 digs, four blocks and a .364 hitting percentage.
With the victory, the Hornets improved to 4-3 overall and 4-3 in the Big Sky Conference. Every match Sacramento State plays this season will be a league matchup. The Hornets also improved to 3-0 at home, and have dropped just one set during those three matchups.
Idaho, which had won four of its last five matches, dropped to 4-3. Sacramento State is now 7-5 all-time against the Vandals and 3-2 on the home floor. Last season, the two teams split their two matches against one another with each resulting in a five-set affair.
Tonight marked the first of back-to-back matchups between the two teams as the Hornets and Vandals will square off again inside the Nest tomorrow evening at 6 p.m.
Defensively, four Sacramento State players had double-figure digs, including sophomore Caty Cordano's career-high 26 to lead all players. Setter Ashtin Olin had 20 assists, 12 digs and a pair of aces, and fellow setter McKenna Smith posted 24 assists and an ace.
Middle blocker Sarah Falk had four kills and a career-high tying six blocks, rightside hitter Karlee Soderberg four kills and three blocks, and middle Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin had two kills and a block.
NOTES -- Head coach Ruben Volta won his 199th career match as Sacramento State's head coach.
