Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State limited Idaho State to a .120 hitting percentage and had 11 aces on the way to a three-set sweep of the Bengals (25-19, 25-12, 25-17) on Sunday afternoon at the Colberg Court.
The Hornets never trailed in a match that was completed in a quick one hour and 15 minutes. Sacramento State had sizable advantages in kills (42-26), hitting percentage (.239-.120), assists (40-26) and aces (11-2). Sacramento State also outdug Idaho State, 48-44, and had just four service errors to go with the 11 aces.
The Hornets beat Idaho State for the second consecutive day, and both outcomes resulted in three-set sweeps. This weekend marked the team's first home matches. Sacramento State (3-1) has now won three straight matches, and all of those wins have come in the last seven days. That included a road win at Northern Arizona.
The loss dropped Idaho State to 1-3 overall and 1-3 in league play. Every match of the season for both teams will come in Big Sky play. Sacramento State has now won 10 of last 12 meetings between the two teams, including seven straight at home. Overall, the Hornets are 37-15 all-time against Idaho State.
For the fourth straight match, a freshman led the Hornets in kills. This time, it was outside hitter Bridgette Smith who had 13 kills, four aces and 10 digs. The true freshman has led or tied for the team lead in kills in three matches thus far, and today was her first double-double. Fellow freshman outside hitter Caitlin Volkmann had her second straight match with double-digit kills, finishing with 11, three blocks and a .304 hitting percentage.
Of the Hornets' 11 aces, a career-best five came from Macey Hayden. The five aces are the most by a Hornet since 2018, and Hayden also had a team-high tying 14 digs. Libero Caty Cordano also had 14 digs to go with two aces. Setters Ashtin Olin (24 assists, six digs) and McKenna Smith (13 assists) combined for 37 assists. Kalani Hayes had five kills, Karlee Soderberg four kills and two blocks, Sarah Falk three kills and three blocks, and Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin a kill and two blocks.
Sacramento State will be back on the road next Sunday and Monday at Northern Colorado. Sunday's game will begin at noon PST.
