Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Travis Adams threw a career-high seven innings as Sacramento State (7-4) split their four-game weekend series against Santa Clara (8-5) with a 6-1 win on Sunday.
Adams (1-1, 3.00), a sophomore from Desert Hot Springs, made his third start of the year on Sunday and turned in an excellent effort for the Hornets. Adams threw a career-high seven innings while allowing just one run. He scattered nine hits, walked one, and struck out five to earn his first win of the year.
After allowing a first inning run, Adams shut down a Broncos offense that entered this weekend averaging over six runs per game. He threw 93 pitches in the outing, including 70 for strikes (75%).
It wasn't always easy for the right-hander, though, as Santa Clara put runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings against Adams. Despite that, Adams seemed to get better as the game went on, retiring the side in order in the sixth and allowing just two hits in his final three innings.
Adams also relied on his defense on Sunday, with his teammates turning three different double plays behind him to limit damage and escape innings.
One of those double plays was started by Matt Smith. After catching a fly ball on the track in left, Smith made a perfect relay to Keith Torres to double off a Broncos runner at first base. Instead of runners at the corners with two outs, the Hornets were out of the inning.
Speaking of Smith and Torres, both homered in Sunday's action. Torres' second-inning, two-run shot was his first of the year and gave Sacramento State a 3-1 lead that proved to be the difference in the game.
Smith followed suit with a two-run shot of his own in the fifth inning, giving Sacramento State its fifth and sixth runs of the afternoon. The home run was number three of the year for Smith, who leads the team.
Jorge Bojorquez scored Sacramento State's first run, drawing a walk before advancing around the bases and scoring on a wild pitch. Dylan McPhillips was responsible for driving in the team's other run, knocking in Ryan Walstad with a two-out base hit in the third.
Each of Sacramento State's first four runs on Sunday were scored with two outs. Smith's home run, which capped the afternoon's scoring, came with one out.
Behind Adams, Sacramento State turned to Jack Zalasky and Stone Churby to close out the game. The pair combined for two perfect innings, striking out three.
Santa Clara's Locke Bernhardt (0-1, 3.48) took the loss for the Broncos after allowing three runs in two innings of relief.
Up next for the Hornets is the team's first midweek game of the year on Tuesday, March 3. Sacramento State will host Pacific at John Smith Field with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
