Box Score MOSCOW, Idaho – Junior guard Emily Enochs had a career performance in Sacramento State's season opener, scoring 18 points Friday night at Idaho. Despite the effort, the Hornets fell to the Vandals, 97-73.
Friday night's matchup was the first game of the year for both teams. Idaho (1-0, 1-0 Big Sky) had previously canceled two games while Sacramento State's (0-1, 0-1 Big Sky) original opener, last Monday against William Jessup, was also canceled.
Sacramento State faced a tough task Friday, playing its first game of the 2020-21 season on the road against the Big Sky's unanimous preseason champion Idaho Vandals, a team that advanced to the Big Sky championship a year ago.
That made no difference to Enochs, a junior guard from Osnabruk, Germany. Enochs shattered her previous career high of five points, scoring a game-high 18 on 6-for-10 shooting, including 2-for-4 from beyond the arc and 4-for-6 from the free throw line.
Her six made baskets were most on the team, as were her four made free throws. Enochs added four rebounds and two assists to her final line while playing a career-high 31 minutes.
Enochs helped contribute to an early Hornets lead, teaming up with freshman Jessica Rios to go on a 9-0 run and put Sacramento State ahead, 11-8, midway through the first. From there, however, it was all Idaho as the Vandals pulled ahead to a 28-18 lead by the end of the quarter.
Powered by six double-digit scoring performances, the Vandals led by 12 at the half and as many as 32 late in the fourth before the game went final.
Eight different players scored for the Hornets Friday night. In addition to Enochs, Tiana Johnson (12 points) and Brooke Panfili (10 points) also finished in double figures.
Point guard Milee Enger played a game-high 34 minutes while dishing a team-high four assists. The team's returning assist leader, Enger averaged 2.8 assist per game a season ago.
Junior guard Summer Menke led the Hornets in rebounds, hauling in 11 boards, seven of them off the offensive glass. She also added eight points.
Sacramento State saw good minutes from its freshmen, as well, on Friday. Freshman guard Jessica Rios finished with nine points on 3-for-5 shooting while adding two assists. Freshman center Neysa Munguia made her presence felt down low, collecting seven rebounds and two blocks in just 17 minutes of action.
Overall, Sacramento State shot 36.0% (27-75) from the floor, including 33.3% (11-33) from beyond the arc. Idaho shot 43.7% (38-87) overall, doing most of its damage down low. The Vandals outscored the Hornets 56-28 in the paint, many of which were the result of a 28-4 advantage in second chance points.
Neither team will have to wait long to get back on the court as game two of this weekend conference series is set to being in less than 24 hours. The Hornets and Vandals will tip off at 7 p.m. again tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 5 in a rematch of Friday night's affair.
As it did tonight, tomorrow's game will air live online on Pluto.TV, channel 1060. More information on tomorrow night's game and on all Sacramento State women's basketball games can be found by visiting the Sacramento State women's basketball homepage online at HornetSports.com.
