SOFTBALL FALLS ON THE ROAD TO UC DAVIS, 5-2

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. -- Despite two hits and an RBI from both Suzy Brookshire and Marissa Maligad, Sacramento State dropped a road game to UC Davis, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at La Rue Field.

The Hornets had just six hits and committed two costly errors that led to a pair of early unearned runs for UC Davis. The first of which was a dropped fly ball that allowed the Aggies to score their first run in the second inning. In the third inning, a two-out gift bloop popup fell between the circle and three Hornet infielders for UC Davis' second run, and later in the inning, a Hornet fielding error led to a third run.

By then, the Hornets (4-7) were in catchup mode and trailing the Aggies, 3-0. Sacramento State got a run back in the fourth when Zamari Hinton opened the frame with a single and later stole second base. She was eventually doubled home by Brookshire who improved her hitting streak to four games.

UC Davis tacked on two more in the sixth runs via two-out double, triple and passed ball. Sacramento State's final run of the game came in the top of the seventh when Maligad clubbed her first career home run, a shot to right field with two outs in the inning.

With the loss, Sacramento State dropped to 4-7 overall and 1-3 when playing on an opponent's home field. The Hornets continue to have trouble in the offensive department as the team is hitting just .211 this season and has recorded six hits or less in six straight, and nine of the 11 games this season.

The victory pushed UC Davis' record to 6-8. Sacramento State is still 64-40 all-time against the Aggies.

Taylor Tessier (0-3) got the loss, allowing five hits and five runs (three earned) with six strikeouts over 5.2 innings. Reliever Savanna Corr pitched the final 1/3 of an inning in relief. All five appearances for Corr this year have come in relief and she lowered her ERA to a team-best 1.50 today.

UC Davis' Andrea Reynolds (2-3) got the win, allowing two runs and six hits with just three strikeouts over seven innings.

Brookshire and Maligad both went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Hinton and Shelby Johnston had the Hornets' other hits. UC Davis also finished with just six hits.

Sacramento State returns to action next week when they play eight games over a stretch of six days. The first will come Tuesday when the Hornets host Seton Hall at 3 p.m., followed by a home doubleheader on Wednesday against Nevada at 1 p.m. Sacramento State will also compete in the three-day Fresno State Invitational (March 10-12) when the team plays five games from Friday through Sunday.
