SAN DIEGO — Sacramento State competed five boats on the final day of the San Diego Crew Classic, which included three finishes in petite finals and a pair of finishes in grand finals, on Sunday at Crown Point Shores Park in Mission Bay. Boats dealt with tough conditions throughout the day, including heavy cross winds and a fog delay.
The varsity eight, which faced boat-slowing winds midway through its race, finished third in its petite final with a time of 7:33.14 over 2,000 meters. The second varsity eight placed fifth in its petite final with a time of 7:11.62 and the varsity four placed third in its petite final at 8:05.09. Sacramento State had two grand final entries, including the second varsity four narrowly finishing out of a medal, placing fourth with a time of 8:40.68. The open eight finished sixth in its grand final with a time of 7:48.24.
Four of today's five entries were slotted into different level finals based on their heat results from yesterday. The varsity eight finished third in its it heat, failing to qualify for the grand final by less than a second. The second varsity four was the only boat not to compete yesterday as it was automatically slotted into today's grand final.
In the varsity eight petite final, Fordham won with a time of 7:31.05, followed by Portland (7:31.36) and Sacramento State (7:33.14) to round out the top three in the six-boat field. The second varsity eight grand final saw San Diego (6:58.66), UCLA (6:59.14), Tennessee (7:02.17), British Columbia (7:09.64) and the Hornets (7:11.62) place among the top five boats in the field.
The varsity four's third place time of 8:05.09 in its petite final was faster than UC San Diego, Kansas State and Saint Mary's. The second varsity four's fourth place time of 8:40.68 in its grand final trailed San Diego, USC and UCLA.
The open eight's grand final saw crews from Cal, Texas, Stanford, Gonzaga and USC finish in the top five, respectively, while Sacramento State's sixth place time of 7:48.24 was faster than British Columbia and San Diego State.
"For the most part, I thought we raced to form today, especially in tough conditions which included heavy cross wind and a fog delay," Sacramento State head coach Mike Connors said. "The varsity eight definitely had the best first 1,000 meters of the season, but the second 1,000 meters was not good. We need to learn to row a complete race, and we will be fine."
