Results/Sunday's Schedule
GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's women's varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, second varsity four and a pair of third varsity eights all competed today in the first day of the Lake Natoma Rowing Invitational at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.
The two-day, nine-team regatta features a powerhouse lineup that includes seven nationally ranked teams, not to mention the top two programs in the country. Among those schools are top-ranked Brown, No. 2 Cal, No. 7 Stanford, No. 12 Wisconsin, No. 15 Gonzaga, No. 16 Iowa and No. 18 Notre Dame. Sacramento State and Loyola Marymount round out the field while the Hornets are co-hosting the event with Cal.
All boats were placed into groups, and compete against different teams in each round of racing. Teams generate points based on performances in their races, and a champion is determined on Sunday. Nearly every race consists of a three-boat field, and tomorrow's racing will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude with the last race of the day at 9:50 a.m.
In this morning's session, Sacramento State's varsity eight (6:52.63), second varsity eight (7:00.92), and varsity four (7:44.36) finished third behind both Stanford and Gonzaga. The Hornets' second varsity four raced in a three-boat field finishing with a 7:58.51, behind Cal and Iowa and qualified for the afternoon's petite final.
In the afternoon session, Sacramento State finished third behind Brown and Iowa in the varsity eight (6:57.33), second varsity eight (7:08.32) and varsity four (8:09.05). In its petite final, the second varsity four's time of 7:58.51 finished behind San Diego and Gonzaga, respectively. In the third varsity eight category, the Hornets' third varsity eight A competed in the first heat where it posted a time of 7:17.59, and the third varsity eight B raced in another heat where it went 8:01.22.
Sacramento State will race a pair of third varsity eights tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. in a petite final, while Sacramento State's varsity four will compete at 8:20 a.m., the second varsity eight at 8:50 a.m., and the varsity eight will go at 9:20 a.m. In the V4, JV8 and V8, the Hornets will take on Loyola Marymount.
