Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Kaitlyn Yerby (4.0 ip) and Celina Matthias (3.0 ip) combined on a six-hit shutout and Jessica Ravetti had two hits and two RBIs to lead Sacramento State to a 4-0 victory over North Dakota on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
With the win, Sacramento State (13-12, 3-0) completes the three-game sweep of North Dakota (10-21, 0-3), as the Hornets posted 2-1 and 6-4 victories over the Fighting Hawks yesterday. The three-game series marked the Big Sky Conference-opening games for both teams.
This is now the third straight season the Hornets have opened up the conference portion of the schedule with a three-game sweep at home.
Matthias and Ravetti were incredible throughout the series. Matthias pitched in all three games, going 1-0 with two saves and a 0.64 ERA in 11.0 innings pitched. Ravetti had two hits and two RBIs in all three games, and finished the series batting .667 (6-for-9) with two doubles, six RBIs and a 1.616 ops. As a team, the Hornets hit .338 over the three games, and the pitching staff combined for a 1.67 ERA.
The Hornets have won a season-high tying five straight games, and 11 of their last 15. Sacramento State began the year with a 2-8 record.
In today's game, Yerby (1-3) worked the first four innings to pick up her first win of the season, allowing four hits with no walks while throwing 52 pitches. Matthias threw the final three innings, yielding just two hits while tossing 37 pitches. Both Yerby and Matthias did not issue a walk.
Sacramento State pounced on North Dakota starter Kaylin VanDomelen early, striking for two runs and four hits in the first inning. Sydney Rasmussen led off the inning with a double and Zamari Hinton followed with a bunt single to put runners at the corners with no outs. One out later, Ravetti drove a 1-2 pitch into center field which scored both Rasmussen and Hinton.
The hit for Hinton extended her hitting streak to a career-high 13 games, which is tied for the fifth longest in the program's Div. I era (1990-pres.). The longest hitting streak in school history was 21 games, set by Izmena Cabrera in 2009.
The Hornets would tack on two more runs in the fifth inning after receiving back-to-back two-out, RBI-singles from Shelby Johnston and Kayla Papez which scored Sasha Margulies and Kailey Olcott, respectively.
Sacramento State received a number of sparkling defensive plays throughout the game, which included a diving catch from Johnston in the second inning. She came back two innings later to throw a runner out at the plate who was trying to score from second base on a single. Rasmussen and Hinton also made diving plays to help prevent North Dakota from scoring.
The Hornets finished the game with four runs and 10 hits as the team's Nos. 1-7 hitters all had at least one knock. Rasmussen finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk, double, triple and a run scored while Ravetti was 2-for-3 with a walk, double and two RBIs. Papez also collected two hits and an RBI. Ravetti now has a five-game hitting streak.
North Dakota, which had runners at the corners with no outs in the sixth but failed to score on Matthias, stranded seven runners on base. VanDomelen (7-11) got the loss, allowing nine hits and four runs over 4.2 innings.
Sacramento State will play four games on the road next week, including a non-conference tilt at Cal on Wednesday followed by a three-game Big Sky series at Montana on Friday and Saturday.
