GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's second varsity eight and third varsity eight both won their respective races against San Diego State, and the Hornets' varsity four beat Alabama on Saturday at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.

Sacramento State competed in four races with the Aztecs with two first-place finishes in the morning session, and was later victorious in one of the three races with Alabama during the afternoon session.

The morning conditions were pretty good, with a slight crosswind during the later morning races and a current of 16,000 CFS.

"I think this morning's races against a much improved San Diego State team went well," Sacramento State head coach Mike Connors said. "The second varsity eight had an aggressive race, finishing first as well as the 3V8 B boat." 

During the morning session, San Diego State's varsity eight rowed to a winning time of 6:24.6 followed by the Hornets (6:27.4). Sacramento State was trailing by half a boat length heading into the final 500 meters and caught up to the stern in the final sprint, but could not overcome San Diego State.

In the second varsity eight, the Hornets won with a time of 6:39.7, over six seconds faster than San Diego State's second-place time of 6:46.1.

"The second varsity eight broke out of a tight race towards the end and that was great to see," Connors said. 

The Hornets' third Varsity eight "B" won its race with a time of 7:13.2, finishing ahead of San Diego State's novice eight (7:17.1), and Sacramento State's third varsity eight "A" (7:39.6).

In the varsity four, San Diego State won with a time of 7:22.2, followed by the Hornets' second-place time of 7:24.9.

In the afternoon session, winds picked up to 6-10 mph with a variable headwind slowing the boats down against the current.

Sacramento State's varsity eight finished second (6:48.7) with a close finish to Alabama's winning time of 6:47.1. The second varsity eight (7:02.9) along with the third varsity eight (7:36.3) finished behind Alabama's first place time of 6:54.7. The varsity four finished with a win (7.36.6) over Alabama (7:45.5).   

"Unfortunately, in the afternoon. we still had issues in the varsity eight although they had a good finish," Connors said. "We had to adapt to lineup changes in the afternoon as injuries are a big factor this year.

"In the second varsity eight, considering how well they raced in the morning, it was disappointing to see their finish in the afternoon. It was good to see the varsity four bounce back and do a great job in the afternoon."

The Hornets return to the water in two weeks when they compete at Mission Bay in the San Diego Crew Classic on April 2-3.
