Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State had a season-high 13 hits, including multiple-hit games from six different players as the Hornets defeated UC Davis, 5-2, in a Causeway Cup softball matchup Wednesday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
Prior to the start of the 5-2 Hornet victory, the two teams completed their game which began on Feb. 12 in Davis but was halted in a scoreless tie after seven innings because of darkness. The Aggies prevailed in that game, 1-0, in the eighth inning when Kelly Zboralske's two-out, RBI-single drove home Taylor Peters with the winning run.
The Hornets, who were playing their home opener, moved their record to 7-8 overall while UC Davis is now 8-8. Sacramento State is now 64-38 all-time against the Aggies, and today's games counted towards the Causeway Cup, the all-sports competition between the two schools.
In the regularly scheduled game, Sacramento State scored three times in the first inning and never trailed The Hornets' Nos. 1-6 hitters combined to go 12-for-24 with four runs scored and three RBIs, and right-hander Celina Matthias went the distance to pick up her fifth win of the season.
Matthias (5-4), who gave up the Aggies' run in the eighth inning of the halted game, bounced back impressively in the 5-2 victory. She allowed just six hits and two runs while walking none and striking out four over seven strong innings. She threw 101 pitches, and allowed just one hit during the final three innings of the contest.
Offensively, the Hornets' Zamari Hinton, Natalie Alas, Shelby Johnston, Sasha Margulies, Sydney Rasmussen and Jessica Ravetti all had two hits. That included doubles from Johnston, Margulies and Kortney Solis as Sacramento State tacked on single runs in the third and sixth innings. The Hornets had multiple chances to blow the game wide open, but stranded 12 runners on base despite only getting six innings of at-bats.
The Hornets scored three times on four hits in the first, including a one-out, opposite field RBI-double from Johnston, and two-out, RBI-singles from Rasmussen and Ravetti. Alas got the rally started with a one-out single and later came around to score on Johnston's double.
After UC Davis cut the deficit to 3-1 in the top of the third, the Hornets answered right back with a run in the bottom of the inning when a Nikki Gialketsis ground ball allowed Margulies to score from third.
The Aggies pushed a run across in the fourth inning to make the score 4-2, but the Hornets upped their advantage to 5-2 in the sixth when Solis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
UC Davis never really threatened during the final three innings as Matthias retired 11 of the final 12 batters she faced. For UC Davis, Leah Munden (6-3) took the loss, allowing four hits and three runs, and had to be replaced with two outs in the first inning.
Alas, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored, improved her hitting streak to six games. In addition, Rasmussen has now reached base safely via hit and/or walk in 12 straight games. Both Alas and Rasmussen are true freshmen.
Sacramento State returns to action this weekend when it hosts the Hornet Round Robin. The three-team tournament, which includes Nevada and Loyola Marymount, consists of six games over two days.
