VOLLEYBALL BEATS CS FULLERTON, WINS 9TH STRAIGHT, IMPROVES TO 10-1

Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. — Sacramento State's Sloan Lovett (12) and Madeline Cannon (10) combined for 22 of the Hornets' 44 kills on the way to a three-set sweep (25-20, 25-18, 25-16) of Cal State Fullerton in the fourth and final round of the Bulldog Volleyball Showdown.

With the victory, the Hornets completed the two-day event with a perfect 4-0 record and were crowned tournament champions. Sacramento State now has tourney crowns in consecutive weeks as the team won the Hampton Inn & Suites Holly Springs Invite last weekend in North Carolina. The Hornets will look to make it three straight tournament titles next weekend when they host the Sacramento State Invitational inside the Nest.

This weekend's tournament victories included 3-1 wins over Fresno State, UC Riverside and Central Michigan as well as this evening's three-set sweep of Cal State Fullerton.

In the process, the Hornets won their ninth match in a row and improved to 10-1 this season, tying the team's best record after 11 matches in school history. Only the 1981, 1983, 1989, 1990 and 1995 squads have also jumped out to 10-1 records. And only the current team and the 1995 squad have done it during the program's Div. I era (1991-pres.).

In addition, the nine-match winning streak is the longest since the 2007 season, and tied for the seventh longest in the program's Div. I era.

For her efforts, Cannon was named the tournament MVP and libero Lexie Skalbeck was also named all-tournament. Cannon finished the tourney with a .301 hitting percentage and averages of 2.47 kills and 1.07 blocks per set. She also had four aces and was consistently taking opponents out of their offense with tough serves. Skalbeck averaged 5.20 digs per set during the tournament, including 28 digs earlier today against Fresno State.

Really, every starter on the Hornets could have been named all-tournament as everybody played well. Outside hitters Lovett (3.73 kps) and Lauren Kissell (2.47 kps, 0.53 bps), middles Cannon and Courtney Dietrich (1.50 kps, 1.00 bps, .375 hitting percentage), setter Kennedy Kurtz (9.40 aps, 0.60 aces per set and a .524 hitting percentage) and rightist hitter Shannon Boyle (2.00 kps, 3.14 dps) all played well.

"We did so many things well and played sound team volleyball all tournament," Sacramento State head coach Ruben Volta said. "We've had a very balanced attack and we are excited about our progress this year. Everyone is believing in each other, and trusting one another on the court."

In tonight's match, Sacramento State had 15 more kills (44-29) and hit over 100 percentage points higher as the Hornets hit .246 to the Titans' .141. The Hornets also had eight more aces than Cal State Fullerton (9-1), including three aces from Cannon and Kurtz, and two from Morgan Stanley.

The Hornets hit at least .200 in every set while Fullerton managed to hit better than .143 in just one of the three sets.

Lovett's 12 kills accompanied a .321 hitting percentage, and Cannon's 10 kills came with three blocks and a .381 hitting percentage. In fact, five of the Hornets' six starters hit at least .250, and four hit at least .300. That included Dietrich who had five kills, three blocks and a .300 hitting percentage.

Skalbeck had 15 digs, Boyle had eight kills and 10 digs, and Kurtz finished with 28 assists, three aces, five digs and three blocks. Defensive specialist Julia Wright finished with nine digs, and was impressive all weekend, finishing the tournament with 2.07 digs per set.

No Titan player had more than seven kills, and only one (Kyra Hill) had more than five kills. Katie Roux led the way with a match-high 18 digs.

The Hornets return to action on Tuesday when the team makes the short drive across the Causeway to face rival UC Davis at 7 p.m. The Hornets will then host the Sacramento State Invitational as the tournament will consist of four teams and six matches played over two days. Two matches will take place on Friday and four more on Saturday. Sacramento State opens the tournament Friday night against Nevada at 7 p.m. For complete tournament information, including schedule, ticket prices and more, click here.
