FOOTBALL'S RECORD NOW AT 1-1 AFTER LOSS AT WASHINGTON

Box Score

SEATTLE — Washington recovered from a slow start to score touchdowns on seven of eight drives as the Huskies cruised to a 49-0 win over Sacramento State on Saturday at Husky Stadium.

Washington improved to 1-1 on the season while the Hornets fell to 1-1 and were shut out for the first time since a 55-0 loss at Arizona State in 2013. The meeting was the first ever between the two schools.

Sacramento State began the game by taking the opening kickoff and driving to the Husky 27-yard line. During the drive, the team was able to convert its first three third-down attempts before a pass on 3rd-and-3 was incomplete. The drive stalled, however, when Brad Cornish pulled a 44-yard field goal attempt wide right.

The Hornet defense responded with a stop on 4th-and-1 near midfield only to have the Sacramento State offense also stopped on a 4th-and-1 try of its own. From that point, the Hornets were not able to produce much on the offensive side of the ball for the remainder of the first half.

UW broke a scoreless tie at the end of the first quarter with four second-quarter rushing touchdowns. Myles Gaskin scored the first two with rushes of 3 and 16 yards. The first came with 13:13 left in the half when Gaskin was able to outrace a Hornet defender to the corner of the end zone. The second came six minutes later when he was able to get around the edge on 4th-and-1.

Following an interception deep in Sacramento State territory, Dwayne Washington rushed for an 11-yard TD with 4:18 remaining to make the score 21-0. The Huskies closed the half with a 90-yard drive which took just six plays and 1:16. The points came on a 1-yard rush from Washington up the middle.

The Hornet defense appeared to have Washington stopped on its second drive of the third quarter but Browning's pass went through the arms of a Sacramento State defender and resulted in a 78-yard TD catch by Marvin Hall. UW added a 49-yard touchdown pass to Chico McClatcher and a 78-yard run up the right side by Gaskin to stake a 49-0 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Sacramento State had its best scoring opportunity midway through the fourth quarter. Freshman Malcolm Thomas stripped UW quarterback K.J. Carta-Samuels and fellow freshman Terrance Jackson recovered the ball at the 4-yard line. However, two rush attempts were stopped behind the line of scrimmage and a false start forced a 3rd-and-goal attempt from the 12. Reserve quarterback Kolney Cassel was sacked which moved the ball back to the 16 and a personal foul against the Hornets resulted in a 48-yard field goal attempt from Cornish which was blocked.

Washington's speed proved problematic for Sacramento State throughout the day. The Huskies compiled 544 yards of total offense, including 218 on the ground with five touchdowns. Gaskin finished with 14 carries for 146 yards and three scores. Browning completed 17-of-24 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns.

Daniel Kniffin was 18-of-35 for 181 yards to lead Sacramento State. Isiah Hennie caught a team-best six passes for 44 yards while Nnamdi Agude led the team with 62 yards on four grabs.

Freshmen Joey Banks and Manoah Pearson had six and five tackles, respectively, to lead the Hornets.

Sacramento State will next play at Weber State in a non-league game on Saturday, Sept. 12.
