Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Senior Lauren Kissell had 20 kills and a .474 hitting percentage, and junior Madeline Cannon chipped in 12 kills, seven blocks and a .500 hitting percentage as Sacramento State defeated CSU Bakersfield, 3-1 (22-25, 25-13, 25-8, 25-16) in non-conference volleyball action Tuesday evening at the Nest.
The match marked the home opener for Sacramento State, and, after getting out of the gates slowly, the Hornets responded with an impressive all-around effort. Sacramento State hit .339 as a team and held substantial statistical advantages over Bakersfield in kills (59-34), hitting percentage (.339-.146), assists (55-33), aces (9-5) and team blocks (12-5).
In fact, after Bakersfield jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first set, the Hornets were able to outscore the Roadrunners in points, 90-48, the rest of the way. Sacramento State never trailed during the final three sets of the match. The Green and Gold hit .452 in the second set and a robust .538 in the third frame.
The Hornets improved to 3-1 this season, and won their home opener for the first time since 2012. Bakersfield, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year after winning the Western Athletic Conference title, dropped to 0-4 with the loss.
The Hornets' .339 hitting percentage was a season high, as three different players hit better than .470. That included Kissell, who finished with 20 kills and just two errors in 38 attacks. She added five blocks, accounted for 22.5 points and has now tallied at least 13 kills in all four matches this season.
Cannon and fellow middle blocker Courtney Dietrich (6-1-8) both hit at least .500, combining for 18 kills, nine blocks and a .536 hitting percentage.
"Everybody on the team had a lot of energy tonight, and we played well in every facet of the game during the final three-plus sets," Sacramento State head coach Ruben Volta said. "Lauren (Kissell) has been very consistent, competitive, and has been good in so many areas this year, and that continued tonight. Our middles Maddie (Cannon) and Courtney (Dietrich) got it going tonight, and I thought it was a great effort from both of them.
"I'm not sure why we started the match slowly, but we had a lot of fans and student-athletes in the crowd tonight supporting us, and we fed off that energy. Even President (Robert) Nelsen and his wife were standing and stomping on set points, and it was just a nice atmosphere in the gym."
Joining Kissell and Cannon in double-figure kills was senior Sloan Lovett who finished with 11 kills. Junior Morgan Stanley finished with 10 digs and four aces, sophomore Kennedy Kurtz had 51 assists, eight digs and three blocks, sophomore Shannon Boyle had eight kills and 13 digs, libero Lexie Skalbeck had a match-best 14 digs, and sophomore Julia Wright chipped in seven digs.
Only one player on Bakersfield's roster hit better than .188, and that was Edithza Urias who finished with a team-high 11 kills, nine digs and a .250 hitting percentage.
Sacramento State returns to the court later this week when the team competes at a two-day, three-match tournament hosted by Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C. The Hornets open the tournament on Friday against Norfolk State, and take on UNC Wilmington and Campbell on Saturday.
