SOFTBALL FALLS AT PACIFIC IN FINAL NON-LEAGUE GAME

Box Score

STOCKTON, Calif. -- Pacific's Marissa Young threw a three-hit shutout to lead the Tigers to a 5-0 victory over Sacramento State in a non-conference softball game Wednesday evening at Bill Simoni Field.

With the loss, the Hornets had their four-game winning streak snapped while falling to 21-20 this year. Sacramento State was playing its final non-league game of the regular season and the team will dip back into Big Sky play later this week for a three-game home series against Idaho State. The series is a first place showdown as the Bengals and Hornets are tied top the conference standings with 10-2 records. The teams play a doubleheader on Friday at noon followed by a single game on Saturday at noon.

Pacific improved to 11-32 this season, and 54-36-1 against the Hornets dating back to 1979.

Young's final line of three hits and three walks with five strikeouts over seven innings was impressive, but the Hornets had numerous opportunities to score. That includes runners at second and third with one out in both the first and second innings, runners at the corners with two outs in the fifth, and finally a runner at third with one out in the sixth, but failed to score each time.

In fact, Sacramento State finished the game 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and 1-for-14 with runners on base. The Hornets stranded nine runners on the base paths, including multiple runners in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings.

Meanwhile, Pacific got off to a quick start, scoring four times off Hornet starter Celina Matthias in the first inning. The Tigers would later add one more run in the fourth inning. In the first inning, Pacific's first four batters reached base safely, and all four (Sara Anderson, Molly Bourne, Nicole Zapotoczny and Cassidy Gustafson) would eventually come around to score in the inning. In fact, that foursome combined for five of Pacific's seven hits and four of the Tigers' five runs as the bottom five players in the lineup combined to go 2-for-14.

The first inning continues to be a problem for Sacramento State pitching as opponents have now scored 39 runs in the opening frame, easily the most runs allowed in any inning this season.

Two of the Hornets' three hits came off the bat of Zamari Hinton, as the freshman second baseman finished 2-for-4. Junior first baseman Sasha Margulies went 1-for-3 and improved her hitting streak to seven games.

Senior center fielder Alexa Chattleton went 0-for-3 and saw both her six-game hitting streak and stretch of 21 consecutive games reaching base safely come to an end. Senior right fielder Paige Martin's first-inning walk allowed her to improve her streak to 23 consecutive games reaching base safely.

With the win, Young improved her record to 4-4. Matthias (9-11) worked the first four innings and took the loss. Kaitlyn Yerby was effective, pitching two shutout innings in relief.
