MOSES THREE-RUN HOMER LIFTS BASEBALL OVER TEXAS PAN-AMERICAN 7-4

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In a 4-4 game with two away in the bottom of the eighth inning Sacramento State senior outfielder Kyle Moses launched a 3-run home run to left to propel the Hornets to a 7-4 win over Texas Pan-American in the second of a three-game WAC series.

"We talked before the game about how we wanted to be there for each other and it just happened that I got a pitch to hit and I drove it and we won the game," Moses said. "(The pitcher) got behind in a situation where you don't want to get behind and he gave me a pitch to hit. This is the same time of the year (as last season) where we started to figure things out and started to gel as a team, so hopefully we can start a little streak here."

Moses was set up with runners on first and second after junior Dane Fujinaka drew a leadoff walk and, with two outs, sophomore Gunner Pollman battled for a seven-pitch walk to keep the inning alive. After falling behind 2-0 UTPA reliever Johnny Gonzalez had to challenge Moses with a fastball and the Hornet right fielder made him pay.

The homer was part of a three-hit day for Moses with three RBIs and two runs scored. Senior Scotty Burcham went 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, and two RBIs with a run scored as the duo combined to go 5-for-8 with five RBIs in the top two spots in the Sacramento State batting order.

Sacramento State (12-9, 2-0 WAC) sophomore starter Sam Long took a no-decision for the first time this year but made another quality start, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts over seven innings. Junior Grant Kukuk picked up the win after getting the last out in the top of the eighth inning and freshman Ryan Smith pitched the ninth to earn his third save of the season.

Texas-Pan American (10-10, 0-2 WAC) starter Robert Quinonez allowed just one run over the first six innings of the game but was tagged for three more runs in the Hornet seventh, with the big blow a two-run triple off the bat of Burcham.

The Broncs took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning as shortstop Isaac Gonzalez had a two-out RBI single and centerfielder Cole Loncar followed with a two-run line drive home run to left. After the Hornets regained the lead with three runs in the seventh, Logan Landon launched a solo home run to left in the top of the eighth to tie the score before the Moses heroics.

Each team had nine hits in the game and through two games in the series the two squads have combined to commit just one error. For the Hornets senior Nathan Lukes had a hit to extend his season-long reached base streak to 21 games and sophomore Brandon Hunley singled to move to a 10-game hitting streak.

Sophomore Justin Dillon will look to lead the Hornets to a sweep in the finale of the series on Sunday at noon.
