LEITAO PITCHING GEM LEADS BASEBALL PAST CAL POLY 2-0

Box Score

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sacramento State senior right-handed pitcher Brennan Leitao allowed just three hits over eight shutout innings and the Hornets capitalized on two Cal Poly errors in the fourth inning to score twice and beat the Mustangs 2-0 on Friday night.

The Hornets all-time wins leader, Leitao picked up his first victory of the year and 25th career win as Sacramento State (9-7) won at Cal Poly (5-10) for the first time since being eliminated by the Mustangs from the NCAA Regional last May.

Leitao faced just four over the minimum in eight innings of work, allowing just three singles without issuing a walk and striking out seven. He did not allow a runner to advance past second base, throwing 73 strikes among his 101 pitches. Sophomore Chad Perry allowed a two-out walk but nothing more in the ninth to finish the win and earn his first career save.

The only runs Leitao needed came in the fourth inning. Hornet freshmen PJ Floyd and Vinny Esposito reached on consecutive Cal Poly fielding errors leading off the inning before junior Nathan Lukes drew a four pitch walk to load the bases. Junior Chris Lewis then banged a 1-2 pitch into right center to single home both Floyd and Esposito.

Sacramento State did have five hits in the game and drew three walks, getting two men aboard in the sixth inning and also two on in the eighth. Cal Poly also totaled three errors but three Mustang pitchers kept the home team in the game, led by 7.2 innings from starter Casey Bloomquist, who allowed just five hits and two walks with nine strikeouts and just the two unearned runs.

All eight hits in the game were singles, with Lukes going 2-for-3 with a walk for the only multi-hit game from either team. Lewis reached base three teams with his RBI single and two walks while senior Kyle Moses and sophomore Brandon Hunley also had hits for the Hornets.

The pitching staffs for both teams combined for 20 strikeouts and just four walks, with Cal Poly striking out 13 Hornets and issuing three free passes. The shutout was the first of the season for the Hornets and the third time that Cal Poly has been shutout this year.

The teams are back at it Saturday evening at 6 p.m. in a matchup of two lefties, with Sacramento State sophomore Sam Long to face Cal Poly freshman Kyle Smith.
