Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In the first meeting between Sacramento State and the new baseball program at Rocklin-based William Jessup, the Hornets scored twice in both the second and fifth innings and five pitchers held the Warriors to one run in a 4-1 Sacramento State victory Tuesday afternoon at John Smith Field.

Sacramento State (8-6) picked up its eighth home win of the season before it plays its last non-conference series Thursday-Saturday at Cal Poly. William Jessup (3-18) outhit the Hornets 8-6 but was unable to string too many hits together.

Freshman PJ Floyd and junior Chris Lewis each went 2-for-4 in the contest with Floyd and juniors Nathan Lukes and Dane Fujinaka driving in runs. Floyd also stole three bases, just one shy of the single-game program record, while sophomore Brandon Hunley stole two and Lewis nabbed one bag as the Hornets were 6-for-7 in stolen bases attempts for the game.

Freshman Austin Root made his first career start and allowed just two hits in two scoreless innings. After two innings from sophomore Jared Paderez fellow sophomore Austin Ragsdale threw three innings of scoreless relief and picked up the win. Sophomore Chad Perry pitched a scoreless eighth and freshman Ryan Smith pitched around a hit and a walk in the ninth for his second save of the year.

The Hornets loaded the bases with one out in the second inning and Lewis scored the first run of the game coming in from third on a wild pitch. With runners on the corners Fujinaka then hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in senior Scotty Burcham.

In the top of the fourth William Jessup got a leadoff single from Mason Kuebler, and after a one-out double off the bat of Wade Brill moved Kuebler to third the Warriors got a run home on a sacrifice fly from Fermin Beza.

Sacramento State tacked on two more runs on the fifth as freshman Bronson Grubbs scored on a Floyd RBI single and Floyd reached second on a balk, stole third, and scored on a Lukes sacrifice fly. William Jessup got the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth but Smith came back with a strikeout and fly out to finish the win.

Starter Steven Rodriguez took the loss for William Jessup allowing two runs in two innings of work. Three Warriors had multi-hit games but the team stranded five on base and the Hornets turned two double plays.

The series against Cal Poly begins at 6 p.m. Thursday in San Luis Obispo, site of Sacramento State's first NCAA Regional appearance last season.
