GOLD RIVER, Calif. --- The Sacramento State women's rowing squad opened the fall portion of the schedule on Saturday when the team competed in a pair of races at the Head of the American on Lake Natoma.
Today marked the first of two fall regattas as the Hornets return to the water in two weeks for the Head of the Lagoon in Foster City on Nov. 7.
Saturday's racing took place over a three-mile course with a time trial start format. Sacramento State competed three boats in the collegiate eight (23-boat field), and two boats in the collegiate novice eight (10-boat field).
In the collegiate eight, which is a varsity eight race, Sacramento State's A boat placed 11th with a time of 18:28 in a Pac-12 Conference dominated field. In fact, it was a Pac-12 crew that took up each of the top nine spots in the field, including Cal's A boat placing first with a time of 16:49. The only non-Pac 12 crew the Hornets finished behind was Loyola Marymount, which placed 10th with a time of 18:11.
Sacramento State's B boat placed 15th with a time of 18:54 and the Hornets' C boat was 19th at 19:48. Cal A (16:49), Washington A (16:50) and USC A (17:10) took up the top three spots.
In the collegiate novice eight, Sacramento State's A (19:41) and B (22:08) boats placed fourth and fifth, respectively. The Hornets' A boat nearly medaled in the race, finishing behind an entry from Cal by just three seconds. It was Cal A (17:34), Stanford (17:43) and Cal B (19:38) that took up the top three spots in the race.

After the Head of the Lagoon in two weeks, the Hornets do not compete again until they host the Sacramento State Invitational on Lake Natoma on March 12. Sacramento State will be racing crews from Humboldt State, UC San Diego, Saint Mary's, Orange Coast College and Mills College.
