Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State controlled possession for most of the game, outshooting North Dakota 27-5 and finding a goal in each half in a 2-0 shutout on Sunday at Hornet Field.
With the win Sacramento State (6-10-0, 4-4-0 Big Sky) solidified its position among the top six teams in the Big Sky table, going into the last two weeks of the regular season with 12 points. The top six teams in the final conference standings will qualify for the Big Sky Tournament.
In addition to the lofty overall shot advantage the Hornets were also 10-3 in shots on goal. Sacramento State took a season-high 27 shots in the game against a North Dakota (4-9-2, 2-4-1 Big Sky) team that has allowed more shots than any other Div. I program in the nation.
"I thought our team performed really well," Sacramento State head coach Randy Dedini said. "Offensively we would have liked to finish a few more goals to make it easier on ourselves but we felt like we had a good rhythm during the game and good possession. We created a lot of good chances so to finish only two out of 27 is something we have to work on, but I thought it was a complete game by our girls playing a good 90-minute game and not allowing too many opportunities for the other team."
The Hornets took the lead on just their second shot of the game, as off a corner kick junior Alexa Heinzer corralled a loose ball in the box and sent a short cross to junior Adaurie Dayak for a tap in to put Sacramento State on top in the eighth minute.
North Dakota's best scoring chance of the game came on its first shot on goal just 50 seconds after the score by Dayak. On a corner kick Andrea Hyduke headed the ball from close range but it was cleared off the goal line on a team save from Hornet junior Jennifer Lum.
UND had just one other shot in the first half while the Hornets totaled 16, but the home team held just a 1-0 lead at halftime.
With the ball on the North Dakota side of the field (and often in the box) for most of the second half, Sacramento State was able to add an insurance goal in the 74th minute. With the ball just to the right of the goal Hornet junior Sofia Chandler sent a short pass that found redshirt junior Alyssa Anderson for a sliding redirection into the UND goal.
North Dakota had just one shot on goal in the second half as junior Molly McConnell had to make just two total saves for her first win and first shutout as a Hornet. UND freshman keeper Olivia Swenson, the NCAA national leader in saves this season, had eight stops in the loss.
Sacramento State also had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks and the fouls were 18-5 North Dakota, further indicating that the Hornets had the ball for most of the game. Lum led all players with six shots, placing two on goal, while Dayak had four total shots and three on goal.
Forward Presley Strother, the lone graduating senior on the 2015 Hornet squad, was honored prior to the game before the team's last weekend home match of the season.
