WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS TO IDAHO ON PAIR OF QUICK SECOND-HALF STRIKES

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Despite doubling up the opposing team in the shot column on Thursday evening, the homestanding Sacramento State women's soccer team could not recover from a pair of quick goals eight minutes apart early in the second half as visiting Idaho posted a 2-0 Big Sky Conference victory at Hornet Soccer Field.

The Hornets had their eight-match Big Sky regular season unbeaten streak snapped with the result, falling to 5-7-1 overall and evening their mark in league play at 1-1-1. The Vandals, who managed just eight shots on the day, improved to 4-4-5 overall and 1-1-1 in league.

Both of Idaho's goals came via Georgia Whitehead, who capitalized off a turnover in the 52nd minute for her third goal of the season, then used her head to sneak a corner into the upper right side of the net in the 60th minute for the only scores of the match.

Sacramento State finished with a 16-8 advantage in the shot column — including an 11-4 lead in the second half alone. Junior Tea Reyes had a chance to break the scoreless deadlock in the 42nd minute as Payton Inabata hit a streaking Micaela Romo down the right side. Romo's cross then found Reyes just inside the box, but her rocket was tipped over the bar by a Vandal keeper to keep the match scoreless.

Candace Ching also had a solid opportunity early on as her header was snatched out of the air by the Idaho keeper in the first 10 minutes of the contest.

Reyes and Ching combined for five shots apiece and all three of their team's attempts on frame.

Sacramento State closes out a three-match homestand on Sunday (Oct. 5) at 1 p.m., hosting Eastern Washington. It will be the final home match for the Hornets for three weeks as they follow up the contest with a trio of road matches before closing out the regular season at home on Oct. 26 against Portland State.
