WOMEN'S SOCCER COMES UP SHORT AGAINST NEVADA

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In a game without many quality scoring chances for either team, Nevada found a goal in the 77th minute and limited the Hornets to just one shot on goal in the game in a 1-0 win on Friday at Hornet Field.

Sacramento State (2-3-0) has still allowed just one goal or fewer in each of its five games this season but took a 1-0 loss for the third time. Nevada (1-3-1) picked up its first victory of the season and defeated the Hornets for the second consecutive year.

"Its disappointing we lost a home game, especially against a team we feel we can beat," Sacramento State head coach Randy Dedini said. "We had a few good quality chances and their goalkeeper made one good save but the rest of them we were missing the frame or getting shots blocked, and that's just not good enough. We looked real good between the 18s and we kept possession pretty well and it looked like we had control of the game for the most part, but if you don't score chances all they need is one, and that's what they got and they won the game."

The Hornets didn't get their first shot attempt until the 31st minute, but were outshot just 6-5 overall in the first half. Sacramento State senior goalkeeper Kimberly Mata made a pair of saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless.

The field opened up more in the second half. Sacramento State got its lone shot on goal in the 58th minute, as senior Kristen Bridges slid to redirect a cross on goal but Wolf Pack junior goalkeeper Devyn Bryar was able to make the save.

Mata made a fine save early in the second half but in the 77th minute Nevada found its goal. Junior forward Daisha Jones-Oglesby found some space along the left side of the Hornet goal and had a cross to freshman Angel Meriwether, who collected and fired back to the left and tucked the shot into the far corner.

The Hornets had a few looks at a potential tying goal, the best coming on a free kick into the box by junior McKenna Swanson, but could not put another try on frame.

Mata made five saves to keep the home team close while Bryar needed just the one save for the shutout. Nevada had a 12-8 overall shot advantage for the game, including a 6-3 edge in the second half, while Sacramento State had three corner kicks to just one for Nevada. Bridges led the Hornets with three shots.

Sacramento State returns to its home field at noon Sunday when it will host Canisius. The Golden Griffins are 1-4-0 on the season after a 2-1 loss at Pacific on Friday.
