MEN'S SOCCER BATTLES SAN DIEGO TO THRILLING 3-3 DRAW

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State trailed 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 but kept coming back to force overtime and earn a 3-3 draw in double-overtime in its home opener against San Diego on Friday at Hornet Field.

San Diego (1-0-2) had a 26-7 shot advantage and put 12 shots on goal, but Sacramento State (0-1-1) redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Philip Bru made nine saves and the Hornets scored on each of their three shots on goal in the game, including a header goal by freshman Devante Raynor with 53 seconds left in regulation.

"It was a crazy game: obviously they dominated the game in possession, in shots, in corners. I didn't think my team played nice soccer today the way we try to bring the ball out from the back and keep it, but I was really proud of my team the way we fought back three times from a goal down to get something out of the game," Sacramento State head coach Michael Linenberger said.

The Hornets had their first deficit early, as San Diego senior Connor Brandt sent in a shot from 10 yards out off a pass from senior Dave Musambi in the 11th minute. Sacramento State senior Chimdum Mez had a moderately contested breakaway in the 16th minute and missed wide, but 10 minutes later he collected a failed clearance by the Toreros and beat goalkeeper Thomas Olsen on an open breakaway to even the game at 1-1.

Bru, who was making his first career start, made four saves in the first half to keep the game level and got some help from his frame as USD hit the crossbar twice. San Diego would get another early goal in the second half, however, as Musambi and Brandt connected again on a close cross and finish in the 50th minute.

San Diego totaled six corner kicks and 12 shots in the second half and kept the pressure up, but in the 82nd minute Hornet senior Andres Garcia headed home a deflection off a strike from sophomore Preston Davis to level the game at 2-2.

The Toreros came right back with a goal in the 86th minute as junior Torrey DeArmas took a feed from sophomore Michael Turner, deked a Hornet defender, and chipped a shot over Bru. The Hornets had one more comeback left, though, as with 57 seconds left Sacramento State sophomore Javier Muñoz found space to the left of the USD goal and sent a perfect cross to Raynor, who headed home his first collegiate goal.

"We had a good run into the box and I knew I had to sit in there to get something out of it, and I see a great ball about to be played so I just sat right in front of the goal and just waited for it," Raynor said. "I had faith in my teammate Javi for giving that ball right to my head, and all I had to do was touch it in so I give my hat off to him. It was unreal; the fans and my teammates so proud of me was an unbelievable feeling."

In the first overtime period the Hornets had an early corner kick but could not get off a shot. USD had two corners in the period and took two shots, with Bru making one stop to keep the game going. The Toreros had four corners in the second OT and had some high quality chances to get a golden goal but were unable to put any more shots on target.

With the tie Sacramento State extended its incredible run of overtime success, as the Hornets have now played 27 consecutive overtime matches without taking a loss. The team is 11-0-16 in overtime contests dating back to the first game of the 2010 season.

USD had a 14-3 advantage in corner kicks for the game and had a 12-3 edge in shots on goal, but the Hornets put all three of their shots on frame into the back of the net. Mez led the home team with three shots while Brandt had seven and DeArmas had six to pace the Toreros.

The Hornets continue their program-record seven game home stand on Sunday hosting Loyola Marymount at 2:30 p.m. following a Sacramento State women's soccer game at noon.
