WOMEN'S SOCCER DOMINATES POSSESSION BUT FALLS TO EASTERN WASHINGTON

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State controlled play for the vast majority of the game, totaling a 21-8 shot advantage while hitting a post and placing seven shots on goal, but Eastern Washington scored just seven minutes into the game and added a second goal on a counter attack in the 72nd minute to take a 2-0 victory on Sunday at Hornet Field.

The Hornets also had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks, had a 14-3 shot advantage in the second half, and were up a player for the last 18 minutes of the match after Eastern Washington senior Katie Coleman was issued a red card.

"With 21 shots and seven corner kicks you would expect the score to be the opposite," Sacramento State head coach Randy Dedini said. "I thought we came out a little bit soft and slow and they got a goal. We battled back and started playing really good soccer and creating a lot of chances, especially in the second half. We had plenty of chances to tie it up and kept pushing but we didn't punch it in the back of the net. The effort was good to try to come back, but we keep putting ourselves behind by coming out slow."

Sacramento State (5-8-0, 0-4-0 Big Sky) has been very competitive in each of its four conference games, losing three by just one goal, but has started Big Sky play 0-4 for the first time since 2004. The 2004 season was also the last time that Eastern Washington (5-5-0, 2-2-0 Big Sky) had defeated the Hornets in Sacramento.

Ten different Hornet players attempted shots in the game and six had shots on goal. The Eagles had only five players attempt shots and had just two players - its two goal scorers - place shots on goal.

Eastern Washington scored first in the seventh minute as Savannah Hoekstra fed Caylah Lunning in the middle of the Hornet box for a shot in over goalkeeper Kimberly Mata. The Hornets had a pair of shots on goal in the following minutes and totaled a 7-5 edge in shots for the first half.

The field really titled the Hornet way in the second half, as the vast majority of the half was played on the Eagles side of the field. Off a corner kick in the 53rd minute the Hornets had three good looks on goal but all three shots were blocked by the Eastern Washington defense.

The Hornets caught a bit of a break in the 57th minute as the Eagles hit the crossbar. In the 70th minute, redshirt freshman Emily Hooper had a 1-v-1 break on Eagle goalkeeper Nathalie Schwery but was denied on a sliding stop and two rebound attempts from sophomore Alexa Heinzer were blocked.

A minute later the Eagles doubled their lead on the counter as Chloe Williams sent a pass from beyond midfield to lead teammate Cassie Black on a breakaway with a finish past Mata.

Right after the goal Hornet senior Kristen Bridges hit the post and sophomore Kassidy Kellogg missed wide on a rebound. Later Hornet senior Kassi Anast had a close header try off a corner from Maggie Plise but missed just wide. In the final seconds Schwery made another superb save to deny sophomore Adaurie Dayak and complete the shutout.

"The bottom line is we have to find the back of the net," Dedini said. "We try to get our girls in the best position to score and I thought we did that today, but we have to execute better."

Mata totaled three saves while Schwery had seven. Black had four shots to lead Eastern Washington while Heinzer had four and was one of seven Hornets with multiple shots in the game.

The Hornets remain at home next week to host Weber State on Friday and Idaho State next Sunday.
