Needing a win to keep its Big Sky Tournament hopes alive, Sacramento State ended its season 9-10-0 overall and 4-6-0 in the Big Sky. The nine wins were the most for the team since the 2010 season, but a late push for the postseason came up just short.
Portland State (9-5-4, 6-2-2 Big Sky) clinched the No. 2 seed for the Big Sky Tournament, which will take place next week at Montana. The Vikings had a 20-5 shot advantage for the game and a 13-2 edge in the second half, but all five of Sacramento State's shots were on goal with several prime scoring chances.
The Vikings placed 10 shots on goal as Hornet senior goalkeeper Kimberly Mata made eight saves in her final collegiate game. Five other Hornet seniors saw their final collegiate action on Friday.
Sacramento State was the more dangerous team in the first half, placing three shots on goal while Portland State only had one. Viking goalkeeper Caitlin Plese made her first save in the eighth minute as she denied Hornet sophomore Alexa Heinzer's header attempt off a free kick. Plese made another fine diving save on a header from senior Kristen Bridges in a solid first half.
The field tilted in the second half but the Hornets did still see some chances. The best chance came in the 54th minute as junior Josie Jogwe found sophomore Lydia Bowman for a straight away shot on goal that has denied by Plese. Meanwhile, Mata made several huge stops of her own on point-blank shots by the Vikings in the 73rd and 74th minutes.
In the 83rd minute the Vikings connected two passes to spring junior Tamia Hassan for a clean break on goal in the middle of the box with a finish to the bottom left corner. With the Hornets pressed forward the Vikings countered and Hassan added an insurance goal in the 86th minute on a finish in close off a short cross.
Mata made three more saves in the last three minutes of the game. Hassan led all players in the game with four shots, placing all four on goal, while Bridges led the Hornets with two.
Mata ends her career third in program history with 13 shutouts and fourth with 196 career saves despite playing just two full seasons as a starter. Mata, Lauren Garcia, and Shelby Salvacion were the last three remaining players from the Hornets 2010 Big Sky champion team. All three were five-year seniors after redshirting in 2010.
The 2014 campaign marked the first time since 2004 and just the fourth time in program history that Sacramento State went an entire season without recording a tie. The team played in overtime just twice this year, also the fewest since the 2004 season.
