Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to force overtime in a back-and-forth contest, but just two minutes into OT Idaho State connected for the game-winning goal off a corner kick to earn a 3-2 win.
On a day with consistent 20 mile per hour winds blowing north to south both teams had a plethora of scoring chances while combining to take 30 shots. In just its second overtime game of the season, Sacramento State (6-9-0, 1-5-0 Big Sky) took its fourth one-goal loss in conference play while Idaho State (6-7-0, 3-3-0 Big Sky) evened its conference record.
The three goals allowed were a season high for the Hornets, who entered the game having not allowed or scored more than two goals in any game this year. The Bengals lead the Big Sky in scoring and demonstrated their finishing ability on Sunday.
"I thought our girls played really hard and we played pretty well," Sacramento State head coach Randy Dedini said. "We created a lot of good chances and the soccer was really good today. We just didn't finish enough of our chances and Idaho State just finished one more opportunity than we did."
The Hornets had a 19-11 advantage in shots and put 11 tries on goal, but Bengal goalkeeper Sheridan Hapsic was able to come up with nine saves. Idaho State placed six shots on goal and finished three while the corner kicks were even 8-8.
The game was wide open from the beginning. Just nine minutes into the game Hapsic made her first save but left a juicy rebound that Hornet senior Kristen Bridges hit off the post. The Bengals took the lead in the 14th minute as freshman Maria Sanchez took a lead pass and dribbled around a Hornet defender before finishing to the far post.
Bridges had another great try a few minutes later and Hornet goalkeeper Kimberly Mata made a great diving save in the 20th minute. The Hornets continued to pepper the ISU goal and got a score in the 43rd minute as senior Kassi Anast sent a wind-aided strike from just beyond midfield that hit the post and then deflected off Hapsic into the Bengal goal. Because the ricochet off the post was away from the goal and hit the keeper in front of the post, the score went down as an own goal.
The Bengals regained the lead early in the second half as senior Amanda Ellsworth took a feed from Lauren Bermudez and beat Mata to the far post in the 58th minute. Less than a minute after the goal Hornet sophomore Adaurie Dayak had a similar break on goal but was denied on a diving stop by Hapsic.
Sacramento State found an equalizer in the 76th minute. Junior Josie Jogwe sent a pass from the middle of the field to sophomore Rachel Leonard who, after a great run off the side from her defensive position, beat Hapsic with a low shot inside the far post.
Idaho State had four corner kicks and each team had one more shot through the remainder of regulation. A first Bengal corner kick in OT led to a shot blocked out of bands by the Hornet defense, but on the ensuing corner Sanchez found Ellsworth for a header amongst heavy traffic in the goal mouth that found its way in.
Ellsworth, who came into the game leading the Big Sky with nine goals, added a pair while Sanchez picked up her sixth goal and fifth assist. Leonard scored her first goal of the year to become the 12th Hornet to score a goal this season.
The six Hornet seniors Anast, Bridges, Mata, Lauren Garcia, Shelby Salvacion, and Jessica Small were honored with their families prior to their final weekend home game. All six also started Sunday's match.
Sacramento State plays three of its four remaining regular season gams on the road, starting with contests at North Dakota and Northern Colorado next week.
