MANDAQUIT STRIKES EARLY AS WOMEN’S SOCCER EARNS ROAD DRAW AT SAN FRANCISCO

SAN FRANCISCO — Junior Jaety Mandaquit put the Hornets out front with her third career goal just five minutes into the match on Thursday night, helping the Sacramento State women's soccer team remain unbeaten with a 1-1 draw under the lights at San Francisco.

The Hornets moved to 2-0-1 on the year with the draw, getting out to its best start since the 2009 squad opened the year with three wins and a pair of draws in its first five matches. The 2020 team also opened unbeaten (1-0-2) through its first three matches in the pandemic delayed campaign.

The Dons moved to 1-0-1 overall on the year, following up a 4-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield with Thursday's result.

Mandaquit wasted little time in putting her side on the board first as Sacramento State earned a free kick off a foul on the right side. Senior co-captain Lexi Schroeder punted a ball toward the penalty spot where Mandaquit out-jumped her defender and headed home a looping shot back to the right post for the 1-0 lead.

She became the fifth Hornet to find the back of the net this season while Schroeder tallied her second assist of the campaign and moved into a tie for the team lead with four points alongside teammate Mia Jackson.

San Francisco found the equalizer in the 21st minute as Olivia Lukrofka got behind the defense and found room at the back post to put home pass from Sydni Yoshida to tie the match.

Sacramento State finished with eight of the 11 shot attempts in the first half and ended the night with an 11-8 advantage in that caetgory, putting four of those on frame. Senior co-captain Ellie Farber finished with a team-best three attempts, while Schroeder added two more.

At the other end of the field, junior goalkeeper Delaney Timmons made three stops as the defense limited the Dons to just four shots on frame as well.

The Hornets remain on the road for their next contest, closing out the weekend with a match at Nevada on Sunday (Aug. 23) at noon.
