WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYS TO 1-1 DRAW IN EXHIBITION OPENER AT PACIFIC

Box Score

STOCKTON, Calif. - In the Hornets' first exhibition game prior to the 2012 season, the Sacramento State women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Pacific on Friday night at the new Knoles Soccer Field.

Sacramento State jumped out to an early lead when, in the 10th minute, sophomore Shelby Salvacion, who missed most of last season due to injury, scored on the Hornets' first shot attempt of 2012. After a scramble in the box, Salvacion collected the ball and fired a shot from the left side to the far right post.

Pacific's Mirella Mattos tied up the game in the 54th minute when she blasted a shot from 25 yards out to the left post.

It was back-and-forth after the game-tying goal, but neither team could convert. Overtime was not played.

Pacific had a small 8-6 advantage in shots but all but one of Sacramento State's shots were on goal. The Tigers also had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Salvacion took a team-high two shots while senior Jordan Carlberg, junior Gabriela Trenton, sophomore Kristen Bridges and freshman Lydia Bowman all had one go at the net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kimberly Mata started in net for the Hornets and played a full 90 minutes. The Stockton native tallied three saves, all in the first half, and allowed the lone goal. Sacramento State is looking to replace former netminder Savannah Abercrombie, a four-year starter who set a Big Sky Conference and school record with 29 career shutouts. Senior Shelby Tomasello and freshman Hannah Gendron are the two other keepers on the roster.

Head coach Randy Dedini gave 19 of his players minutes on Friday night, including six true freshmen and two transfers. Other than Mata, only freshman defender McKenna Swanson played all 90 minutes. Sacramento State lost three defenders off last year's roster, including first team all-Big Sky selection Shea Roberts

Up next for the Hornets is their second and final exhibition game. Sacramento State will meet the Sacramento Storm at 5 p.m. on Sunday at Hornet Field. Live stats will be offered for the match.
