SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State juniors Victoria Marthaler and Skyler Gartin were named the Big West Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.

The Hornets joined the Big West for the first time this season, meaning Marthaler and Gartin become the first Sacramento State volleyball players ever to earn a Big West weekly honor.

Both players were instrumental in helping the Hornets to a 3-0 record and Sacramento State Invitational championship. In fact, both were named to the all-tournament team while Marthaler was named the tournament's co-MVP.

The Hornets earned wins over Saint Mary's (3-2), Texas Tech (3-0) and Nevada (3-2).

Marthaler
• Posted 60 kills over three matches
• Averaged 4.62 kills per set to go along with a .257 hitting percentage
• 18+ kills in each match
• 22 kills vs Nevada, 18 kills vs Texas Tech, and 20 kills vs Saint Mary's
• Now has 25 straight matches with double-figure kills

Gartin
• Led the Hornets with 1.38 blocks per set
• Also averaged 1.69 kills per set to go with a 413 hitting percentage
• Had just three errors in 46 attacks
• Career-high 13 blocks vs. Saint Mary's
• The 13 blocks are tied for the third most in Sacramento State's Div. I era

Sacramento State (3-3) is back in action later this week at the three-day Boise State Invitational. The Hornets will take on host Boise State on Thursday (5 p.m.), Eastern Washington on Friday (2:30 p.m.) and Saint Mary's on Saturday (10 a.m.). All three matches will stream on YouTube.
