CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Sacramento State's varsity eight had a big morning on the final day of the Triton Invitational on Sunday.
The two-day regatta, hosted by UC San Diego, was held at Lower Otay Lake - home of the United States Olympic Training Center. Sacramento State competed four boats at the event - varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four - and each of those boats had a victory yesterday.
Today, the varsity eight was the first race of the morning, and Sacramento State's top boat did not disappoint. The Hornets cruised to a 2,000-meter winning time of 6:52.58, easily besting Gonzaga (6:59.10) and UC San Diego (7:06.56).
Sacramento State, the reigning WCC Crew of the Week, defeated Gonzaga for the second straight week. Last week at the Big Tens, the Hornets defeated Gonzaga by slightly over a second compared to today's victory of over six seconds.
In other action this morning, the Hornets' second varsity, varsity four and second varsity four all placed third in their respective races.
Today marked the final regular season competition. The Hornets do not race again until hosting the WCC Championship on May 15-16 on Lake Natoma.
