MENDOZA WALKOFF GRAND SLAM CAPS SOFTBALL’S 10-2 MERCY RULE WIN OVER PORTLAND STATE

SACRAMENTO -- Madi Mendoza capped a 3-for-3 day with a walkoff grand slam in the sixth inning to clinch a 10-2 victory over Portland State on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The game was stopped after Mendoza's blast because of the eight-run mercy rule.

Mendoza had a huge day, going 3-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, a homer and career-high five RBIs. The junior shortstop was one of six Hornets with hits today as Sacramento State pounded out six extra base hits (five doubles, one homer).

The win gave Sacramento State (30-17, 9-6) a three-game sweep of Portland State (14-30, 4-11) as the Hornets won both games of a doubleheader yesterday. Today's victory was the Big Sky Conference regular season finale and final home game for the Hornets. It also came on Senior Day as four Sacramento State players - Kennedie Bacon, Faith Epperson, Danyelle Leone and Lafulafu Malepeai were honored pregame for their contributions to the program.

Despite a 9-6 league record, the Hornets will not have a shot at the Nos. 1 or 2 seeds (and a first round bye) at the Big Sky Tournament (May 4-7 in Pocatello, Idaho). Northern Colorado also finished 9-6 and owns the tiebreaker over the Hornets by virtue of taking two of three games earlier this season in Greeley. Either Montana (9-4) or Idaho State (8-5) will be the No. 1 seed as the teams still have two games to play in their series this weekend.

Sacramento State's final regular season game will come on Friday at 16th-ranked Stanford.

In today's contest, the Hornets, like they did in every game this series, jumped out to an early lead. That included three runs in the first, one in the second (to take a 4-0) lead, and later added two in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Big scoring plays for the Hornets included an RBI-double from Madison Evers-Lyles in the first, RBI-doubles in the second and fifth for Mendoza, an RBI-double from Shannon Garcia in the fifth, and the Mendoza grand slam. Mendoza knocked in a run in all three of her at-bats, and lifted her batting average to .345 overall and .417 against conference opposition. The grand slam, which extended Mendoza's career high hitting streak to nine games, came on the first pitch and scored Saskia Raab, Malissa George and Epperson.

Raab scored three runs, as seven different Hornets touched the plate. That included each of the top four hitters in the Sacramento State lineup who combined to go 6-for-11 with seven runs, four doubles, a homer and eight RBIs.

Leone (5-2) got the win in the circle, tossing her second complete game of the season. The right-hander allowed just six hits and two runs while throwing 94 pitches over six innings.

Multiple Hornets finish the Big Sky regular season hitting above .300 in conference play, comprised of Malepeai (.471), Mendoza (.417), Evers-Lyles (.392), Epperson (.345), Garcia (.341) and Raab (.319).

Sacramento State's game at Stanford on Friday night is a 6 p.m. start, and will stream on ESPN+.
