MOTHER NATURE DELAYS BASEBALL’S CAUSEWAY CLASH WITH UC DAVIS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Fresh off its second-straight Western Athletic Conference series win, the Sacramento State baseball team stays local for its next contest, heading across the Causeway to take on UC Davis in a Mother Nature-delayed midweek affair on Wednesday (April 22) at 6 p.m. at Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium.

ABOUT THE AGGIES
• UC Davis enters the week with a 17-20 overall record and an 8-13 mark in Big West Conference play
• The Aggies are coming off a road series loss at CSUN, winning the opening game by an 11-3 score before falling 11-2 in game two and 5-3 in game three
• UC Davis is 8-7 at home this season, winning four of its last five within the friendly confines
• Junior outfielder Tyler Howard leads the team with a .294 average, scoring 30 runs, slugging 16 extra-base hits, and driving in 18
• As a team, the Aggies are batting .246 with 25 home runs and averaging 4.86 runs per game
• The UC Davis pitching staff sports a 4.96 ERA, striking out 286 over 321 innings, allowing a .288 average to opposing batters

• Sacramento State holds a 149-94-1 lead in the series with UC Davis, including a 47-40 lead as Division I rivals
• The Aggies, however, have won five of the last seven head-to-head meetings
• The Hornets' last win in the series came on April 15 of last season, posting an 8-2 victory on the road
• Sacramento State is 61-53 on the road against UC Davis, but the Aggies have defended their home field by winning three of the last four

• Wednesday marks the 245th all-time meeting between Sacramento State and UC Davis according to available records that date back to 1949 — by far the longest running series (in terms of games played) in the program's history ahead of Pacific (191), Nevada (187), and Fresno State (182)
• The 149 wins against the Aggies are the most for the Hornets against any one opponent, ahead of the 116 wins against Chico State and the 107 against Pacific

CONFERENCE CALL
• Sacramento State is a combined 303-382-3 (.443) against the current Big West Conference lineup
• UC Davis is the second Big West opponent for the Hornets this year after they hosted UC Irvine in a three-game series to open the 2026 campaign
• Sacramento State has lost its last four against Big West opponents dating back to a three-game sweep of UC Riverside on April 25-27 at home
• Although the Hornets will be moving to the Big West beginning next season, Sacramento State and UC Davis will not be conference rivals as the Aggies are moving on to the Mountain West Conference

MIDWEEK MADNESS
• Wednesday's contest marks the 11th midweek game of the year for the Hornets, who are 5-5 in their previous 10 this season
• Sacramento State has won five of its previous seven midweek games, posting wins over Pacific (10-0 in seven innings on March 11), San Francisco (8-3 on March 17 and 12-2 in seven innings on April 14), splitting a pair at Kansas with an 11-1 loss on March 24 and a 7-4 win on March 25, and handing Nevada an 11-2 defeat on April 6
• Wednesday marks the sixth midweek road game this season where the Hornets are 2-3
• This season's five midweek victories are the most since the 2024 team finished with six midweek wins
• Of the team's last 33 midweek games, a little less than half (15) have been decided by two runs or fewer, with 11 of those 15 decided by a single run

LOOKING AHEAD
• Following Wednesday's contest, the Hornets head to Southern California for one of it's biggest series of the season, taking on top-ranked UCLA in a three-game series on April 24-26 at Jackie Robinson Stadium
• First pitch for the series opener is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 2 p.m. start on Saturday, and a Noon opener for Sunday's series finale
• The Bruins are the second top-five opponent for the Hornets this season following a trip to Baton Rouge to take on then-No. 2 LSU (March 6-8)
• This weekend also marks the first time that Sacramento State will meet the No. 1 team in the nation since traveling to Tucson to face No. 1 Arizona in a three-game series on Feb. 29-March 2 in 2008

HORNET SHORT HOPS
• Sacramento State enters the week having won seven of its last 10 and is coming off its second consecutive Western Athletic Conference series victory after taking 2-of-3 at UT Arlington over the weekend
• The Hornets won the opener by a 2-1 scored before posting a seven-inning run-rule win by an 11-1 score in game two
• It was a historic weekend for the program as Sacramento State posted its 1,000th Division I victory with the win in the series opener against the Mavericks
• Three of Sacramento State's last six games have ended in a run-rule decision with the Hornets winning two of those
• Overall, Sacramento State is 4-4 in run-rule games this year
• Four Hornets who have played in at least half of the midweek games this season are hitting better than .300 in those contests: Ryan Ellis (.438), Erick Dessens (.386), Jace Jeremiah (.345), and Jakob Poturnak (.324)
• As a team, Sacramento State is batting .269 in midweek games, outscoring opponents, 59-41
• Meanwhile, the Hornets' pitching staff continues to be stingy, limiting opponents to a .212 average with eight pitchers posting an opponents batting average under .200
• Poturnak (18) and freshman Sam Harry (10) have combined to drive in 28 of the team's 59 runs during midweek contests and have hit six of the team's nine home runs in those games
• Dessens leads the team with 17 midweek hits, adding nine runs, three doubles, and four home runs in midweek games
• Ellis leads the team with 11 runs scored and has walked a team-high 10 times in seven midweek appearances, posting a 1.467 OPS (.813 slugging and .654 on-base percentage) to pace the squad
• Dessens finished with multiple hits in three of the team's four games last week, bringing his team-high total to 18 multi-hit games to go along with his team-high 14 multi-RBI contests
• Half of those multi-hit performances have been three-hit days or better while Dessens has driven in three-or-more runs nine times
• Dessens, Jace Jeremiah, and Cameron Sewell enter Tuesday's game at UC Davis riding five-game hitting streaks
