ROWING CONCLUDES BIG TEN INVITE; VARSITY EIGHT BEATS WISCONSIN AND SAN DIEGO

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's varsity eight defeated both Wisconsin and San Diego to highlight the Hornets' final day at the Big Ten Rowing Invitational on Sunday at Lake Natoma. 

The Big Ten Invitational, which began yesterday, featured 19 programs. That included all 11 Big Ten teams, five WCC schools, and three ACC squads. Sacramento State was among the five WCC schools competing, and Michigan State was the regatta host.

Among the star-studded field of 19 teams included eight nationally ranked programs, comprised of No. 1 Stanford, No. 5 Washington, No. 9 Cal, No. 12 Rutgers, No. 16 Ohio State, No. 17 Michigan, No. 20 UCLA, and No. 23 Indiana.

The Hornets competed five boats yesterday and today - varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, second varsity four and third varsity four.

In today's racing, Sacramento State's varsity eight posted a time of 6:45.97, finishing second in the race behind Iowa, but besting Wisconsin (for the second straight day) and San Diego. The Hornets also beat Gonzaga yesterday evening when it posted a season-best 2,000 meter time of 6:36.34.

The Hornets' second varsity eight posted its best time of the season (7:00.82) while finishing ahead of San Diego by nearly six seconds.

Sacramento State's varsity four, second varsity four, and third varsity four each placed fourth in their respective races today.

The Hornets return to the water next week (April 25-26) when it competes at the Triton Invite in Chula Vista.
