WOMEN’S TENNIS CLAIMS OUTRIGHT BIG SKY REGULAR SEASON TITLE WITH WIN OVER PORTLAND STATE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- For the second time in the last three seasons, the Sacramento State women's tennis team has claimed the Big Sky Conference regular season title, defeating visiting Portland State by a 5-2 score on Saturday afternoon and sending the seniors out with a win on "Senior Day."

Since winning their first in 2004, the Hornets have claimed at least a share of the league's regular season crown 11 times and will go for their third consecutive Big Sky Tournament title — and their 14th overall — as the top seeded team at next week's conference championships in Phoenix, Ariz. Saturday marked the first outright regular season championship for Sacramento State since the Hornets finished 8-0 in 2012.

With the win on Saturday, Sacramento State enters the postseason on a roll, winning its fifth consecutive dual to close out the year while improving to 17-5 overall and 7-1 in league play. The victory also pushed the Hornets to 9-0 at home this season and extended the program's home winning streak to 18 consecutive triumphs dating back to last year.

For the 10th consecutive dual, Sacramento State got out to a 1-0 lead in the match with a doubles point win. Cami Maldonado Gutierrez and Reese Walker earned a 6-2 win at No. 3 before Lou Baudouin and Emilija Pranyte outlasted their Viking counterparts for a 7-5 win at the No. 2 spot.

Walker made it a 2-0 lead with a win at No. 1 singles, defeating Scarlett Perkins by a 6-0 score in the first set before Portland State's top player was forced to retire.

Irene Riva defeated Nene Uemura at the No. 3 spot, 6-1, 6-3, and Pranyte (6-4, 7-6) and Palina Saulevich (6-3, 6-2) posted victories at No. 5 and No. 6 to wrap up the title.

As the top seed, the Hornets earn a bye into the semifinal round along with second-seeded Northern Arizona on day two of the conference tournament, which begins on Thursday (April 23) with the No. 3 seed taking on the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds squaring off in the first round.
