BASEBALL DROPS NIGHTCAP AS UTAH VALLEY EVENS SERIES

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sophomore Brett Ott finished with a pair of hits and drove in a run while Sam Harry and Jakob Poturnak each slugged doubled on the night, but a big second inning by visiting Utah Valley put Sacramento State in an early hole from which it could not recover as the Wolverines posted an 11-1 win in seven innings on Friday night at John Smith Field.

The two teams split the day-night doubleheader, setting up the decisive game three on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. PT.

Ott posted his seventh multi-hit game of the year, bringing home the Hornets' only run of the night with an RBI single to center in the fifth. That came two batters after Poturnak doubled to the gap in right centerfield to break up the shutout and Utah Valley's perfect game bid by Jacob Heppner (2-1), who had retired the first 13 batters of the game to that point.

Sacramento State had a chance to add on to its total in the sixth as Harry's one-out double was followed by walks to Jamie Mullin and Luis Pimentel-Guerrero, but reliever Aaron Rice induced a fly ball to get out of the jam.

A run in the first for the Wolverines set the stage for a big second inning that saw the visitors strike for six runs (only one earned) on four hits to make it a 7-0 lead. Utah Valley added three more in the fourth and capped the scoring with a single run in the sixth.

Carson Timothy (2-4) suffered the loss, allowing only the single earned run on two hits over 1.1 innings of work. Four relievers followed with senior right-hander Colin Hunter closing the night with 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four.
