EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon State broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the fifth inning, and four more in the sixth, to beat Sacramento State, 8-0, on Sunday morning.
The game marked the Hornets' finale of the Jane Sanders Classic, a three-day tournament hosted by Oregon. Sacramento State, playing its toughest collection of opponents of the season, went 2-3 at the event. That included a pair of one-run losses to 18th-ranked Oregon, and victories over both Nevada (ranked sixth in the mid-major poll) and Oregon State
The Hornets' overall record is now 18-7, and this morning marked the team's first loss at a neutral field (9-1). Of the team's 25 games, 15 have come away from home.
In today's loss, Sacramento State had plenty of hard contact early that resulted in outs. In addition, the Hornets had two runners thrown out at the plate in the first inning. That allowed Beavers starter Amelia Streuber to settle down as she eventually tossed a three-hit shutout.
The Hornets' three hits came from
Karissa Avila (double),
Madison Evers-Lyles and
Shannon Garcia.
Alexa Ortiz (6-3) took the loss for Sacramento State, throwing six innings.
The Hornets are back in action four times next week. That includes a Tuesday morning home matchup vs. Utah Valley at 11 a.m. Sacramento State will then play a three-game series at Seattle over the weekend where it plays twice on Saturday (2 p.m.), and once on Sunday (noon).
