SACRAMENTO -- Utah Valley's Lily Riley allowed four hits and a run over seven innings to lead the Wolverines to a 4-1 victory over Sacramento State on Tuesday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
The loss dropped Sacramento State to 18-8, while Utah Valley improved to 16-8. Today also marked the first time Utah Valley has defeated the Hornets, as Sacramento State had been 4-0 in the all-time series.
Riley needed just 84 pitches to earn the complete game while improving her record to 10-2. The Hornets' lone run came off the bat of
Madi Mendoza - a solo home run in the sixth inning. A transfer from UTEP, the homer was the first for Mendoza in a Sacramento State uniform.
The game was scoreless through four innings as Riley and Sacramento State right-hander
Kennedie Bacon were locked in a pitchers duel. However, Utah Valley broke through for a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth. A pair of Hornet errors played a factor as two of those runs were unearned.
Sacramento State had just four hits, as
Lafulafu Malepeai,
Shannon Garcia and
Karissa Avila had the other hits.
Saskia Raab had reached base safely in every game of the season until going 0-for-3 today. Two of her balls were hit hard, including a deep drive to center field that was caught on the warning track, and a line drive to the gap in the seventh that was caught.
The Hornets, who are riding their first losing streak of the season (three games), play a three-game series in Seattle over the weekend. That includes a doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by a single game Sunday at noon.
