SOFTBALL DROPS A PAIR TO BOISE STATE

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State was limited to a combined two runs and nine hits as Boise State swept a doubleheader against the Hornets on Tuesday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The Broncos won the opener, 4-1, before taking the nightcap by a 5-1 score.

Sacramento State, playing without four injured starters (three middle of the lineup players), has dropped five straight while falling to 18-10. The Hornets opened a six-game homestand today that will see the team host a three-game series this weekend vs. San Diego.

Boise State, which has played a grueling schedule, improved to 15-17 overall. The Broncos also defeated the Hornets last season at Shea Stadium.

Boise State used a similar pitching formula in both games. Olivia Bauer went four innings for the win in Game 1, and Julianne Rose went four innings for the victory in Game 2. Loula-Rae McNamara worked the final three innings in both games to earn a pair of saves.

One of the highlights of the day was freshman Ava Medellin hitting her first collegiate home run in the opener to account for Sacramento State's lone run. The only Hornet to hit safely in both games was Saskia Raab while Lafulafu Malepeai combined to go 1-for-3 with three walks and an RBI.

The Hornets' Danyelle Leone entered the game in relief in both contests, and was dominant. In two games, the right-hander threw 10.0 innings while allowing just six hits and one run. Boise State hit .188 while Leone was in the circle. For the season, Leone lowered her season ERA to 1.21, and WHIP to 0.99.

Sacramento State returns to Shea Stadium later this week for a doubleheader vs. San Diego on Saturday at noon, followed by a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
