RENO, Nev. -- No. 59 Sacramento State won at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the doubles ladder to take an early lead then won three straight in singles play to edge host Nevada by a 4-3 score on Saturday afternoon at the McArthur Tennis Center in Reno, Nev.
The win was the third straight overall for the Hornets, who improved to 9-4 on the season and won for the second time in the last three duals against the Wolf Pack. Nevada fell to 4-5 overall with the loss.
Freshman Cami Maldonado Gutierrez and Reese Walker were the first doubles team off for the Hornets, tying things up with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot. The tandem of Emilija Pranyte and Palina Saulevich then clinched the 1-0 lead in the match with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
Host Nevada responded with the first two wins in singles play to take its first lead of the day, winning in straight sets at both the No. 1 and No. 5 spots in the lineup before Sacramento State rallied once again. Senior Palina Saulevich tied the match at two apiece with her 6-4, 6-4, win over Wiem Boubaker at No. 6 and junior Irene Riva put the Hornets ahead for good with a 7-6 (4), 6-2, win over Petra Janigova at No. 3.
Redshirt junior Lou Baudouin then clinched the victory with a three-set comeback, defeating Marlene Foerster, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, victory at the No. 2 spot.
The Wolf Pack claimed the final win of the day with a straight-set win at No. 5.
Pranyte and Saulevich became the first Hornet doubles duo to claim multiple doubles point clinchers this year with their second on Saturday. Meanwhile, Baudouin became the fifth Hornet with a match-clincher thanks to her first of the season, while winning for the fourth time in five three-set matches this year.
After playing six straight duals on the road, Sacramento State returns home for a pair of contests, hosting future Big West Conference rival Cal State Fullerton on Friday (March 13) then hosting current Big Sky Conference rival Northern Arizona on Sunday (March 15). Both matches are scheduled for 11 a.m. first serves at the Sacramento State Tennis Complex on campus.
