BOZEMAN, Mont. -- The Sacramento State women's tennis team improved to 2-0 in Big Sky Conference play on Sunday morning, bouncing back from a doubles point defeat to take the first four singles contests in dominating fashion en route to a 5-2 win over host Montana State at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
The Hornets won their second consecutive dual while improving to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in conference action. The Bobcats, meanwhile, suffered their fifth consecutive defeat in falling to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Freshman Cami Maldonado Gutierrez and junior Reese Walker posted Sacramento State's lone doubles win, improving to 4-0 this season as a pair with a 6-2 victory over the duo of Lola Bean and Elle Middleton. Montana State, however, answered with wins at the No. 2 and No. 1 spots to take a 1-0 lead in the match overall.
With the scene switching to singles, the Hornets poured it on to quickly clinch their eighth win of the year. Walker was the first one off with a 6-2, 6-1, victory over Anna Wise at the No. 1 spot and was followed by redshirt junior Lou Baudouin, who finished off Nia Gelashvili with a 6-2, 6-3, victory.
Maldonado Gutierrez wrapped up her second win of the day with a 6-0, 6-3, victory over Terezie Stverakova at the No. 4 spot before Palina Saulevich came through with the clincher, defeating Middleton, 6-1, 6-0.
With the match in hand, junior Irene Riva then outlasted Angel Bean in a three-set marathon for the fifth point, splitting a pair tiebreakers in the first two sets en route to a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1), 12-10, victory.
Montana State clinched the final point of the day with a three-set win at No. 5 singles to close out the match.
Sacramento State closes out a run of six straight matches on the road on Saturday (March 7), traveling to Nevada for an 11 a.m. first serve against the Wolf Pack.
