SOFTBALL CRUSHES UC DAVIS, 8-1; OPENS SEASON IN CONVINCING FASHION

DAVIS, Calif. -- Alexa Ortiz was dominant in the circle, and the Sacramento State offense combined for eight runs and 12 hits in an 8-1 road victory at UC Davis on Thursday afternoon at La Rue Field.

Three of the first four Hornet hitters of the game scored, and Sacramento State had little trouble in a game that marked the season opener for both teams.

Lafulafu Malepeai opened the game with a triple, and with one out, Katie Marsh and Madison Evers-Lyles clubbed back-to-back homers to give Ortiz more than enough run support.

Ortiz pitched the first five innings, allowing just one hit with one walk and five strikeouts. She did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, and at one point, retired seven batters in a row. The only UC Davis knock was a single to center in the fifth.

Meanwhile, the Hornet offense, coming off a record-breaking season, picked up right where it left off. Five Sacramento State players had multiple-hit games. In addition, of the team's 12 hits, eight went for extra bases.

The first six Hornets in the lineup combined for the team's 12 hits, including three hits from Marsh (3x3, BB, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI), and two apiece from Malepeai (2x4, R, 3B, RBI), Evers-Lyles (2x4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI), newcomer Saskia Raab (2x3, R, 2B) and Malissa George (2x4, 2 2B, 2 RBI). Newcomer Madi Mendoza had a hit and a stolen base, and made a brilliant play at shortstop in the fifth inning to rob a would-be Aggie hit.

Sacramento State scored three times in the first, once in the second, three more in the fifth, and once in the sixth. After Ortiz went the first five innings, Keeli Smith worked the final two frames, allowing just a hit. Smith is back after missing last season with injury.

Dating back to last season, Malepeai now has a 13-game hitting streak, while Marsh improved her hitting streak to nine games.

Sacramento State is back in action the next three days hosting the NorCal Kickoff. The Hornets' first game of the tournament is tomorrow vs Saint Mary's at 2:30 p.m.
