SACRAMENTO -- Senior
Kennedie Bacon tossed a two-hit shutout, and
Lafulafu Malepeai clubbed a solo homer to lead Sacramento State to a 2-0 victory over Saint Mary's on Friday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
Today was the Hornets' first game of the NorCal Kickoff, a three-day tournament Sacramento State is co-hosting with UC Davis. The Hornets play twice tomorrow at home, followed by a game Sunday at home.
The victory moved Sacramento State to 2-0 on the young season, as the Hornets opened the yesterday with a road win over UC Davis.
Bacon threw 108 pitches while walking two and striking out seven. Both hits allowed were singles, and she faced just five batters over the minimum. That included retiring the final 11 batters of the game in succession. Saint Mary's did not get a base runner past second base the entire afternoon.
Malepeai led off the bottom of the first with an opposite field home run to extend her career-best hitting streak to 14 games dating back to last season. The Hornets did not get another hit off Saint Mary's starter Odhi Vasquez until the sixth inning when
Saskia Raab's single scored
Katie Marsh who had walked earlier in the frame.
Malissa George would added a single later in the inning as the two teams combined for just five hits.
Bacon allowed just two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings, while Vasquez allowed three hits and two runs with five walks and seven strikeouts in six innings.
The Hornets will play twice tomorrow, including another game vs. Saint Mary's at noon, followed by a matchup with Cal Poly at 2:30 p.m. The first game of the day is 9:30 a.m. featuring Saint Mary's vs. Cal Poly.
