SACRAMENTO -- For the second time in three weeks, Sacramento State senior guard
Prophet Johnson has been named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week.
Johnson had one of the best weeks in program history, leading the Hornets to three home wins over a five-day stretch. The wins came over opponents that entered the game in second place (both Montana and Montana State) and fourth place (Weber State).
The Dayton, Ohio, native also earned the award on Jan. 20. He becomes the first Hornet to earn multiple Big Sky Player of the Week awards in the same season since Bryce Fowler accomplished the feat during the 2021-22 season.
Johnson scored at least 26 points in all three games, which included a career-high tying 35 points in a 104-90 win over Weber State. For the week, he averaged 29.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 3.3 steals and 37.6 minutes per game. He shot 64% (33-52) from the field, 67% (10-15) from the 3-point line, and also buried 12 free throws.
Named the College Insider National Player of the Week on Monday, Johnson began the week with 27 points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals in Thursday's 83-80 win over Montana State. He followed that effort two days later in an 86-79 victory over Montana by dropping 26 points, seven rebounds, four assists and five steals.
Then, despite playing for the third time in five days, Johnson poured in 35 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals in Monday's 104-90 win over Weber State. The 104 points are the most by the Hornets vs. a Div. I team since 2007, and the fourth most against a Big Sky team since joining the league in 1996.
In Big Sky play, Johnson is now averaging 20.0 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.6 steals while shooting 49% from the field and 40% from the 3-point line.
At 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, his seven double-doubles are just three shy of Sacramento State's Div. I era (1991-pres.) single-season record.
The Hornets are back in action for the finale of their four-game homestand on Saturday vs. conference leading Portland State at 7 p.m.
