SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State won a pair of games on the second day of the Capital Classic, defeating both San Jose State (6-1) and Sacred Heart (3-2).
The Capital Classic is a three-day, five team tournament that began on Friday. Sacramento State split its first two games yesterday with a 4-3 win over Santa Clara and a 2-0 extra inning loss to San Jose State. The Hornets, who are 3-1 at the event, conclude the tourney tomorrow vs. Nevada at noon.Â
Sacramento State moved its record to 16-3, the team's best start in 31 years. The Hornets are now 7-2 at home, and 4-1 on the current homestand.
As a team this afternoon, the Hornets hit .340 with a pair of homers, and the pitching staff had a 1.00 ERA, allowing just six hits with nine strikeouts in 14.0 innings.
Danyelle Leone (2-0) picked up the win vs. San Jose State, allowing just three hits and one unearned run with a pair of strikeouts over six innings.
Keeli Smith worked the final inning to lock up the victory.
In the nightcap,
Alexa Ortiz (5-2) allowed three hits and two runs with seven strikeouts over seven innings. She yielded only one hit the final five innings after giving up two runs in the second.
Saskia Raab,
Addy Buckley and
Hailee Bustos each hit safely in both games. Raab collected four hits, Buckley three hits, and
Madison Evers-Lyles was 3-for-3 with three RBIs against San Jose State. Â
The Hornets never trailed against the Spartans scoring three times in the first, and three more in the fifth. The scoring was highlighted by homers from
Lafulafu Malepeai and Bustos. The round tripper for Bustos was the first of her collegiate career. Buckley (2), Raab (3) and Evers-Lyles (3) combined for eight of the Hornets' season-high tying 12 hits.Â
In the victory over Sacred Heart, both teams scored a pair of runs in the second inning, before the Hornets finally broke the tie with a two-out, RBI-single from
Shannon Garcia in the fifth scoring Raab. Earlier in the inning, Raab narrowly missed a home run, crushing a ball that bounced off the top of the high fence in center.
The Hornets had just six hits, and no player had a multi-hit game vs. the Pioneers.
For the season, Sacramento State's team ERA is now 1.51, and the Hornets are hitting .297. Raab has reached base safely in all 19 games this year.
The game against Nevada is the only scheduled game tomorrow at the Capital Classic. Of the six games played at Shea Stadium during the tournament, the Hornets will have played in five of them.
