SOFTBALL LOSES LATE LEAD, FALLS AT HOME TO NEVADA

SACRAMENTO -- Nevada overcame a two-run deficit with two runs in the sixth, and four more in the seventh, to defeat Sacramento State, 10-6, in the final round of the Capital Classic.

It was a game of spurts, as Nevada scored four runs in the first inning, before Sacramento State scored six unanswered runs (three in the first inning; three in the third). Nevada then scored six unanswered in the final two innings to eventually win in front of a Shea Stadium crowd of 412 fans.

The Hornets conclude the Capital Classic with a 3-2 record, which includes wins over Santa Clara, San Jose State and Sacred Heart. The other loss (besides today) came to San Jose State. Sacramento State played six home games this week, and went 4-2.

The Hornets' record fell to 16-4, which is still the best 20-game mark in 31 years. The 1995 squad began the season with a 17-3 record on the way to a 40-win season.

Nevada, which is ranked sixth in the Mid-Major Top 25 poll, improved to 13-7. The Wolf Pack have won five straight, and 10 of the last 11 meetings against the Hornets.

Sacramento State's defense was uncharacteristically subpar today, as the Hornets committed a season-high four errors. In fact, all six runs scored against Hornet starter Kennedie Bacon were unearned. Bacon had a nice outing, allowing eight hits with zero walks and seven strikeouts over six innings. She needed 121 pitches to complete those six innings, but that number would have been much less without the errors extending innings.

Nevada outhit the Hornets, 14-5, which included six straight hits in the four-run seventh.

Trailing, 4-0, in the first, the Hornets sliced the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom half of the inning via two-run triple from Lafulafu Malepeai and an RBI-single from Saskia Raab.

The Hornets took the lead in the third via Malepeai home run, followed later by a two-run blast from Shannon Garcia. The homer for Malepeai was her team-high seventh of the season while Garcia's bomb was her first of the season.

After crushing Nevada starting pitcher Talia Tretton to the tune of five hits and six runs over 2.1 innings, Wolf Pack reliever Hailey McLean was lights out, allowing no hits with two walks and five strikeouts over the final 4.2 innings.

Malepeai reached base safely in all four plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with two runs, two walks, a triple, homer and three RBIs. Raab, Madison Evers-Lyles (double) and Garcia provided the other hits.

The Hornets will now embark upon their toughest week of the season. Sacramento State will travel to Eugene, Ore., for a three-day tournament (Friday-Sunday) hosted by Oregon. The Hornets will play five times, including once vs. Nevada, and twice vs. both 14th-ranked Oregon and Oregon State. Sacramento State's first game is Friday vs. Nevada at 12:30 p.m.

All five games the Hornets play at the tournament will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
